Executive summary: As head of the Bahamas Taxicab Union, it was he
who led the general strike in 1958 that brought the grievances of the taxi
drivers into national focus. This event served as a catalyst for social and
political change during the 1960s. He was elected to the House of Assembly
in 1967 and was re-elected on six occasions. As Minister of Labour and
national insurance, he oversaw the introduction of the national Insurance
programme in 1974.
