Healthy Eating: Preventing Diabetes

Diabetes is a rather common in The Bahamas. If you develop the disease it can lead to all sorts of problems and could even steal years from your life. To help prevent diabetes you need to protect yourself with a well-balanced diet, which of course, is good for everybody. Adding these "super foods" to your diet can help prevent diabetes.

 

Nuts: A recent study of over 64,000 Chinese women showed that eating peanuts every day reduced their risk of developing diabetes by as much as 21 per cent. Studies suggest that other nuts may have similar benefits. To make sure you don't pack on the pounds, try eating about one-ounce per day of walnuts, almonds or cashews.

 

Coffee: In one recent study, people who drank four cups of coffee a day had a 30 percent less chance of developing diabetes. Decaf is just as good, according to experts. But again, be careful you don't wipe out the benefits by indulging in heavily-creamed lattes, or unfiltered coffees, which may also spike cholesterol.

 

Cinnamon: This aromatic spice appears to reduce blood sugar swings that can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. Just a half-teaspoon a day, sprinkled on cereal, yogurt or fruit has been shown to keep blood sugar levels, well, level.

 

Milk: Get milk! Drinking eight ounces or more truly does a body good. It reduces the risk of developing diabetes by as much as 40 per cent. Milk's calcium, magnesium and vitamin D boosts your body's ability to use insulin correctly. make sure you choose skim milk, or reduced fat milk so you don't cancel out the benefits.
