What is Bahamian Music?
Fred Ferguson, a renowned Bahamian musician, producer and songwriter feels there are three distinct styles of music: Goombay, Rake 'N Scrape and Junkanoo.
The music of George Symonette, Blind Blake, Eloise Lewis and others of that era can be described as Goombay.
The traditional music, prominent on the Out Islands, is known as Rake 'N Scrape. This distinctly Bahamian music features goatskin drums, rough guitars and percussion instruments made from ratchets and saws. Today the rhythms of musicians such as Ronnie Butler can be described as the modern form of Rake 'N Scrape.
Junkanoo is a Bahamian holiday celebration which occurs on Boxing Day (December 26) and again on New Year's Day (January 1). A large parade, resplendent with music is traditionally held on Bay Street. Junkanoo music is a combination of African and Caribbean rhythms, often played on drums and various skin or pipe instruments.
Calypso and reggae music are also popular in The Bahamas.
