No, you may not sleep in the airport. I believe the arrival terminal may even close after the last flight of the day arrives.

And, there are no "airport" hotels as you would find in the big cities in the US.

Closest hotel is probably the South Ocean Beach & Golf Resort but they are closed due to non-hurricane related rennovations.

But Nassau is a tiny island and it only takes 15-20 minutes to get to the airport from almost anywhere on the island (except way out East, where there are no hotels).

If I were you, I'd pop into the Hilton hotel, downtown. That's where a lot of the airline people stay (pilots and stewardesses). They will get you a cab back to the airport in time.

We land at 11:30pm and have to catch a 7am out of Nassau airport. That gives us about 5 hours to sleep somewhere as close as possible to the airport. ANy recommendations? Can you just sleep in a chair overnight at the airport? THanks!

TO: NASSAU AIRPORT ADMINSTRATION...
WE WERE THERE BACK IN DECEMBER AND FOUND YOU HAD TURNED THE ENTIRE AIRPORT INTO A NO SMOKING AIRPORT...THIS WAS A BAD DECISSION. THERE ARE A LOT OF TRAVELERS WHO SMOKE THAT WILL NOT COME BACK TO THE BAHAMAS BECAUSE OF THIS DECISSION. YOU NEED TO MAKE A PLACE FOR TOURISTS TO SMOKE AND NOT MAKE US FEEL LIKE 2ND CLASS CITIZENS..WE [SMOKERS] SPEND A LOT OF MONEY IN YOUR COUNTRY. IF THE BARTENDERS DIDN'T LIKE OUR SMOKE THEY SHOULD HAVE FOUND OTHER JOBS. YOUR AIRPORT IS THE ONLY ONE I KNOW WHICH IS TOTALLY SMOKE FREE - CHANGE IT. OTHERWISE I WILL BE BACK ON MAY 16, 2005 FOR THE LAST TIME, AND I MEAN IT !

Funny, people said the same thing about New York City when they put in the no smoking rules, and it hasn't hurt tourism one bit. Restauranteurs were up in arms, but business is still thriving.

Even with the high european smoking tourist numbers, NYC has survived and become a better place. The same will hold true for the bahamas.

A survey done in 2002 reports that 61.9% of US airports are smoke free airports. (fully non-smoking, with smoking allowed only OUTSIDE of the airport. With wait times up to 3 hours, this would indicate that it's time to give up the smokes if you indend on traveling.

This is also catching on in some major European cities.

We have 4 hours to kill on arrival. Any suggestions of a fun restaurant in town that we would have time to cab to and get back within that time frame?

Hi hoopgirl,

Take a taxi to Cafe Johnny Canoe on Cable Beach (Bay Street.) You can enjoy a deliciously Bahamian lunch, then stroll across the street to the little Cable Beach Straw Market to shop for authentically-made Bahamian crafts. If you have extra time, stroll down to the three-mile white sandy beach behind the hotels. And, there's always the casino. :)

Cable Beach is a $15 taxi ride (one way) but is really the closest place to enjoy four hours, nearest the airport.

Hoopgirl,

Keep in mind that on most days. (Mainly Thursday- Mondays) it can take up to 2 hours to get thru the Airport check in process.
You'll have to pick up your baggage and go thru customs and immigration upon arrival, then drag it to the departure area and check in with your airline/go thru 3/4 security points and bahamian customs (US customs if your heading back to the states). Some day's this is a breeze. Other days the lines are backed up out the door - even at 6am.
