We are going to Paradise Island in August. Can someone tell me if basic groceries (loaf of bread, ham, weiners, cokes) are cheaper in Nassau. Also, are there reasonably priced grocery stores (where locals shop) in downtown Nassau ? How about in P.I.?

Thanks,
JC / Texas

Nothing is cheap is Nassau. :)

But groceries are available at the local supermarkets for much less than you'd pay in a "tourist" or hotel store.

There is a Super Value supermarket located on Mackey Street, about 1/4 mile from the Paradise Island exit bridge.

There is also a smaller grocery store, right on Paradise Island, in the Hurricane Hole Shopping Plaza.

If you are looking for meats (hot dogs, lunchmeat ect.) the market on Mackey street has a variety of produce, deli, frozen foods... Your basic small grocery store. Not the Jewel, but it works!

If you are going to venture downtown the best grocery store (by far) is the City Market just east of downtown. City Market is a part of the Winn Dixie chain out of Florida. I can say this with authority in that I have now been living here for about 6 months (moved here from Atlanta) and have pretty much been in them all. It should be noted I made a point when I moved here to find the best grocery store (which took a while) but this is definately it. One tip, if you are going to be doing any reading make sure you bring whatever you want with you, magazines are usually at least twice what you would pay for them in the states.

This is for Gregory, a good secondary private school is St. Augustine's College or St. John's College, and a good private primary school is St. Thomas Moore or any other catholic school. If you want a public school you may have to go and see the school for yourself.
The average cost of living for a month may be 2500. I hope I've answered your queries.
