I am interested in relocating from Atlanta to Nassau. I have been doing research via internet, but a lot of the info is vague. Can anyone shed some light on the process that has gone through it? Many thanks....

If you are not a Bahamian citizen, the first problem you will have is finding work. Foreigners need work permits and they are difficult to get unless you possess special skills that are rare in The Bahamas, or unless a Bahamian company arranges a work permit for you.

If you are retired or independently wealthy, then you can apply for a residency permit. If you purchase a home, valued over $500,000, you pretty much are guaranteed a permit.

I'll be down in Nassau on the 24th. I can't wait!!!! But I need to find furniture stores and hardware stores, as we are redecorating our home there. Can anyone make any recommendations??? Something around the Cable Beach area, off West Bay St. I'm also bringing my kids on this trip. Are there any really cool places to bring kids ages 5 and 7?

Thanks!

Tracy

The only halfway decent hardware store on Cable Beach is John S. George on Bay Street.

For a better selecton you can visit the main business district of Nassau, which is in Palmdale, an area down Mackey Street, just south of the Paradise Island bridge.

There, you will find numeorus stores offering hardware, plumbing supplies, lighting and several furniture stores.

Remember, New Providence is only 21x7 miles big, so nothing is "far away".

how hard are the work permits to get? What exactly is the process to getting them? Does it make it a lot easier if you do have a special skill? Any insight would be awsome!

Thanks!

i am 18 yrs old and live in the u.s. (florida) and seriously trying to persue moving to the bahamas for a couple of years. I am a certified scuba instructor and am wondering if that qualifies as one of those "specialty" jobs or am i just plain out of luck? Would an annual residency permit nullify the need for a work permit? also, what does the term indepently wealthy mean(everywhere i look there seems to be a different explination)? Your help would be great thanks!

Your questions go beyond the scope of this vacation board.

Try asking those questions on the Bahamas Community Message Board.

Perhaps, use the search first, the questions may have already been answered on that board.

There are no tropical disease epidemics here whatsoever. AIDS is probably the biggest problem and The Bahamas leads the Caribbean in stemming that disease.
