Is metal detecting lawful on the Bahama Islands? If so do you get to keep what you find, or turn it in to the local government?

Yes, metal detecting and even treasure hunting is legal here. You pretty much get to keep what you find unless it is an antique artifact of some kind, or actual pirate's booty. In that case the government gets involved with both a historical and financial interest.

Admin ?? do you know if permits are required on Grand Bahamas Island to metal Detect on the beaches??? Do you live on the Islands?? The reason I ask, is I was given a contact at the Royal Police-in ref to possibly needing a permit-a very nice lady with the tourism board there did some calling around for me and sent me an email back with the address ...I sent a letter about 4-5 weeks ago asking this question- I have not received a response from them yet and I am leaving on my vacation in 10 days..any info would help, I'm going to try to contact someone at R.B.Police by phone to see what happened to my request. thanks, Scott

No, a permit is not required for small hand-held metal detectors for combing the beach.

I confirmed this with the Office of The Prime Minister, just today, for you.
