Carolyne,
There are two liquor stores between the airfield and where you are staying. Groceries are not a problem on Cat Island. What can be described as Mom n Pop stores are up and down the island, we like the one in New Bight but you have many to choose from. We never stayed at this house as we have one farther down south in Greenwood. Be sure to stop at the hotel down there and say hello to the Illings, they are a wealth of info. Cat Island is a wonderful place.

owner , Olivia d' Windrift here...(Curtis Bannister) ...... the air conditioning is new (with another back up in storage) There is no golf cart (but a courtesy car or jeep is available for very reasonable) i think one of the things thatmakes a vacation special are experiences such as snorkeling and fishing.....cooking up a feast at the end of the day and sharing the experience with your friends and loved ones....i just spoke to the last guests who left a few days ago and they had a fabulous time . They will be adding a post shortly. www.margaritabeachrentals.com

Last month, we stayed at the Sunset Beach House owned by curtis bannister. We had a most excellent vacation, one that was quite a welcome change from the Marriot scene. We kayaked , snorkeled , drank lots of rum punch and relaxed much. (hangovers were an occaisional problem. Reef structures just off the beach were abundant with fish. The house is beachy with nice furniture but not so prissy that you feel uncomfortable. Satelite tv reception was surprisingly good . On my complaint list.....the top of the blender was missing the knob (no big deal) and the door on the courtesy van didn't want to close quite right....but did get us to the store and back! (and you couldn't beat the price) We saw the other house from a distance and it looked very nice.....all in all I highly recommend Curtis Bannister's Sunset Beach House.Look up his caretaker Renold Butler for excellent fishing and diving charters! www. margaritabeachrentals.com

hello ,,,,Curtis Bannister here,,,....what is needed right now on Cat Island are basketball hoops (without backboard).(we have the plywood) We will set them up for the young boys and girls. If you have any children's (all ages) sneakers in new or good condition. Also, ...........there are vacationers leaving for the Olivia d'Windrift home, and they asked if they could take something to help the island. This seems to be a good way to get necessary items for the Cat Island residents quickly. You may call me at 1 814 453 7723 thanks,Curtis Bannister

WE stayed here a couple of years ago and had a similar poor experience at this house. We paid in advance for use of the car and boat associated. When we arrived the boat did not work and neither did the car. Curt Bannister did reimburse us, but that was it. In addition the refrigerator did not work (only the freezer did), so all of the food we bought went bad and we had to eat out to lunch every day - very costly. The satellite tv did not work. The house is beautiful and in a beautiful location. I would recommend the Greenwood or someplace else on Cat Island. It is a beautiful, place with awesome people.

Hello......owner Curtis Bannister here,,,,Sincerely , we want everything correct for guests and we want them to have a good time. We have great (enthusiastic) testimonials from the last several families and 2 rebooked for next year already) There is a new large stainless steel refrigerator (with another new one in storage as a backup).TV reception is perfect. The courtesy car is another story .....It broke down again! we try to provide it as a nice thing for the guests at a nominal fee......wow..does it ever get beat up!....The temptation is just too great for the guests to take it off road to explore remote parts of the island.....some of the ruts are 2 to 3 foot deep! Several transmisions, a differential, exhaust systems are just some of the items that we have replaced! Same with the boat motors (guests striking coral heads, etc), My wife Stephanie says to forget about trying to provide these free or nominally priced extras but i keep trying...as usual she is probably right....The thing is , if the courtesy car is laid up for a week, guests would have to rent one from the local car rental (for more money).....to avoid this problem I bought two extra vehicles for use as backups,,,,,,we now have 3 vehicles being worked on almost constantly by Bahamian mechanics! and we will continue to provide these courtesy vehicles if possible .....my sweet wife just shakes her head and continues to help me.........I have to say that we have put tremendous energy into the property and will continue to do so; its a labor of love,,,like Patti in the previous posts says , the property is beautiful.... we pledge to do our most dilligent best to keep everything as close to 100% as possible....or we'll die trying! ......one additional note...... I agree, Greenwood is a great dive resort!

You have an interesting perspective. Can you please elaborate? Do you have expertise in this area? Is it the scale of the project that you think is problematic or the location or simply construction in general in the islands?

This posting is being split into 3 separate postings to meet the size requirements for this forum.

We just returned from Cat Island and rented the "Spectacular Oceanfront Beach House" on the "Olivia D'Windrift Estate" owned by Dr. Curt Bannister. We had a great time and found everything to be in good working order. There have been many posts on this forum and several similar ones so I will go into our experiences in some detail.

First, we found Cat Island to really be at the end of the Earth (which is exactly what we wanted). The island's supplies are limited and food arrives once a week on a boat from Nassau; I'd highly recommend that you bring critical items with you (we brought steaks, lamb, chicken, and spices with us in coolers). You can buy the basics (cereal, pasta, rice, flour, cornmeal, sugar, etc.) at any of several very small stores on the island. The more exotic your culinary tastes, the more you need to depend on what you can pack in. You can't take fresh fruits or vegetables into the Bahamas, however. Some items are expensive (perishable fruits/vegetables, soda, beer) but others fairly cheap (rum). We cooked all of our meals except lunch on the last day - baked our own bread, etc. - for me it was pretty therapeutic but for others, I expect that a 50/50 shot at whether there will be a loaf of WonderBread at the store might be frustrating. Our cell phones didn't work and internet access is very hard to come buy (a blessing as far as I was concerned!).

The people on Cat Island have got to be among the friendliest in the Bahamas - everyone waves when you drive by and we felt very safe the entire trip. It is a small island and all of the locals either know each other or are related to each other. The caretaker of the house is Renold who knows absolutely everyone on island. He was an indepensible help to us - brought us fresh lobsters and fish to the house and we hired him to take 6 of us out fishing one day (with a side trip to Winding Bay Beach and an off-shore reef for snorkeling). On our last day, we had lunch at the Greenwood resort and our rented car broke down - we were worried that we'd miss our flight but Renold came through and met us at Greenwood to insure that we got to the airport on time (incidentally, the family/owners of Greenwood are extraordinarily nice and not only served up what my kids insist are the best cheeseburgers that they've ever had but also helped us with contingency plans to get to the airport - one of my only regrets about our trip is that we didn't spend more time there).

Part 2:

The house was in good condition. I'm not sure how old it is - probably less than 20 and more than 5 years. Everything worked well except for the gas grill which had one-half of the burner out (but we still managed to grill a leg of lamb for Easter dinner). It is not a luxury hotel but instead is a private home and if you're expecting to be waited on like you would be at a resort, then go to a resort. The airconditioning worked but we only turned it on once - seabreezes and ceiling fans were fine most of the time. The water comes from cisterns under the house - the week before we arrived there was a lot of rain so the cisterns were fun and the water tasted fine - I suspect that if there is a long, dry period that the water can develop a mineral taste (you can buy 5 gallon bottles of bottled water at the food stores but we just drank tap water). As island housing goes, it seems to be one of the nicest structures there.

There is a pool at the house but it is pretty small and because of the proximity of the beach, none of us used it (except for my 8 year old who found frogs in it at night). There was a satellite TV connection (which we also did not use) and dozens of movies on videotape (which we did use). The kitchen was ample with pretty much everything we needed to cook with and to serve 12 people. There are 4 kayaks (which we used daily), 2 bicycles (also used regularly), a tennis court in good condition, and some fishing gear (that we didn't use).

On Cat Island, you have to be prepared to be independent and flexible. Also, remember that things happen slowly on Cat Island - island time is Eastern Standard Time plus/minus 2 hours. Things break down on the island and there is not the convenience of on-site technical assistance 24-hours a day; for complicated repairs (transmissions!), I think someone has to come from another island to fix things so there is a fair among of "duct tape and wire" repairs that are done out of necessity.

Part 3

All-in-all, it was a great trip for the 12 of us (2 families with kids 18 and under). We did alot of snorkeling in the cove about a 5 minute walk from the house. The beach there was nice but the beach at the deserted Cutlass Bay Resort another 5 minute walk further was even nicer with even better snorkeling. The coral heads were alive with Parrotfish, Blue Tangs, Angelfish, and a lot of other fish that I didn't recognize. We encountered several Barracudas and some rays but did not see any turtles. If you take the kayaks out of the cove, there is another very private beach which was good for snorkeling and shelling.

There are many other beaches on Cat Island and to be honest, we didn't leave the property much since we enjoyed the convenience of being close to the house (particularly with all of the kids with us!). The beach at Port Howe was lovely and the beach at Greenwood was also very nice. We stopped by Fernandez Village briefly and the beach seemed nice, too. Take a side trip to the deserted Hermitage, inbetween Old Bight and New Bight - pretty inspirational plus it has a fantastic view of the island.

The house itself sits on the rocky edge of a point and is on a rock cliff about 30 feet above the ocean - there is a coral head right below the deck and you can watch reef fish, rays, and Barracudas swim by. Sunrises are beautiful across the bay to the East and sunsets are almost as nice across the cove to the west.

The bottom line is that this was a great vacation site for us - but we specifically wanted isolation, safety, and a beautiful location. Don't expect resort service or amenities and if you need that kind of thing, consider Greenwood, Fernandez Bay Village, or Hawk's Nest (we didn't see Sammy T's so I can't comment on it). But if your idea of a great vacation is staying in a well-equiped private home and being pretty independent, then this is a good choice.
