I'd like to bring cereal, peanut butter, ers and cheese to the Bahamas. Is there a tariff on these items and if so how much? How carefully do they check on these items coming in at customs?

It is all right to bring in reasonable amounts of those types of items for personal consumption. However, you can buy such things at the local grocery store for almost the same or just little more than you'd pay back home and it might make your trip easier.
