We are thinking about heading to GB for the Holiday season. There will be a 20 year old travelling with us. Is there enough to do for her in GB? How is the flats fishing? I have heard some comments that it is a tad run down, is this true? Is there any local charm or is it too turisty?

I wouldn't recommend freeport. Very overpriced, and locals are not at all friendly, take their time helping you. Yes, this island is run down. Way to touristy, and no good deals on prices, Not at all like Nassau. They won't even deal at the straw market. We have been to the Bahamas several times and will never go back to Freeport!

I totally disagree with the Anonymous Tourist. "The locals are not at all friendly"??? Where were you staying? I've been to the Bahamas several times also, and I find GBI to be one of, if not the most, friendly of the islands. Yes, the island is still feeling the hurricanes of 2004, so the larger palm trees are gone. Prices compare favorably to most other islands. And, if I had a 20 year old daughter with me, I'd much rather the safety of GBI instead of the filth & crime that permeates through Nassau!

I can't agree more with "ritz owner". I have been to Freeport 3 times in the past 10 months. The Bahamian people there are very friendly. I was just in Nassau in May, I liked Freeport much better. Freeport is charming. Nassau is way to touristy. There are plenty of travel bargains to Freeport. Sounds to me that "anonymous tourist" has some stock in Nassau. Your 20 year old will have a blast in Freeport. Try it and I guarantee you will keep going back!

I have been hearing a lot of conflicting reports about Freeport. I am a college student and am traveling with a friend on a shoestring budget, thus I am looking at staying at the Island Palm Hotel. I have heard that it might not be in the best area of town (downtown) and I have travelled fairly extensively abroad so I know to be alert in general but is there anything specific I should watch out for while travelling on GBI? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have been going to Freeport 2 to 3 times per year for the past 5 years and we love it there. Everyone we have dealt with has been friendly and helpful. If you stay downtown you can take cabs at relatively low prices to get to the beaches and the Count Basie Square where there is free entertainment every night and bars and restaurants. Try Taino Beach on a Wed. night and go to the fish fry - relatively inexpensive and good food and dancing. There are buses, but I have never used them so I cannot comment on whether that is an easy way to get around.
