We bought a very nice oceanfront lot in Farmer's Hill, Exuma almost 13 years ago and had excellent real estate service and clear title transfer (from a prior US owner) via the services of Percy Fox, owner of Oceanview Realty and the legal services of Mrs. Debi Burrows(address below). We are the process of building on Exuma - slow but sure.

Bahamian,

Your words about Pindling jibe with everything I've read. 1/2 the people thought him a hero. The other 1/2 (along with most foreign gov'ts) knew him as a drug running no good. I assume you had to live through it in person.

So that was then, what's the truth of it now? I'm buying Freeport lots (one in Bahamia West and another in Bahama Terrace). I'm going through HG Christie. I have met them in person and was shown around the island by a very nice lady. All in all they seemed a nice sort.

Nowadays, what do I need to be careful of, if anything?

Be careful. There really isn't any such thing as an honest Bahamian attorney. Literally every one of them belongs to a legal mafia conspiracy that makes a living ripping off foreigners.

In your case, they would lead you through a three year legal quagmire (that would cost you good money) before you discover that the land your Grandmother bought was a rip-off scam, as was most of the Bahamas real estate sold to foreigners in the 60's, 70's and 80s, when the master criminal Lynden Pindling ruled the country.

Either that, or you will discover that the land has been stolen by Bahamian crooks who "quieted" the title. That is where they put a small ad in a local paper announcing the fact that they intend to take possession of the land if no one objects. Of course, no one objects because the chances that the owner (who lives in the US or the UK) would see the local ad is a billion-to-one odds.

Of the hundreds of people we have corresponded with, we have never seen a successful resolution in cases like yours.

My Grandmother has offered to give me a lot that she bought in Exuma. Where can I get information about getting the deed transfered into my name, or adding my name to the deed.
