In a capitalistic society competitive business provide the best economical trickle up or down theory for the population benifit. The ownership of certain types of businesses (retail being one of them) have been reserved strictly for Bahamians. In order to get a work permit - your potential employer would have to apply for it and show that there are no Bahamains qualified to do the work they are proposing hiring you for. The cost of a work permit can vary from a few hundred dollars to several thousand per year.

I am interested in opening a mid to high end clothing and jewerly store in Exuma, but I'm american.I have gone to the Island to attempt to get a information about work permit to open a store. I was told that only Bahamians can start a business of that kind.How do I get a work permit or do I need to seek an atty in the Bahamas?
