It is a rather strange non capitalistic system which I consider self detrimental. In a capitalistic society competitive business provide the best economical trickle up or down theory for the population benifit. A Bahamian or any other foreigner is free to start a business in the United States - Like I said a strange policy

The ownership of certain types of businesses (retail being one of them) have been reserved strictly for Bahamians. In order to get a work permit - your potential employer would have to apply for it and show that there are no Bahamains qualified to do the work they are proposing hiring you for. The cost of a work permit can vary from a few hundred dollars to several thousand per year.

A good reference for finding out the rules regarding business ownership and work permits is the Bahamas Handbook and Businessman's Annual. You can buy it on Amazon.com

I am interested in opening a mid to high end clothing and jewerly store in Exuma, but I'm american.I have gone to the Island to attempt to get a information about work permit to open a store. I was told that only Bahamians can start a business of that kind.How do I get a work permit or do I need to seek an atty in the Bahamas?
