As the number of people afflicted with diabetes increases yearly, Grand Bahama Health Services is taking a proactive approach to increasing awareness of the disease.

“About 285 million people from all over the world are affected by diabetes and it is also expected that this figure may rise up to 435 million by the year 2030 if no action is implemented to stop diabetes,” Yvonne Clarke, nursing officer 2 and coordinator for chronic non-communicable diseases said.

World Diabetes Day will be celebrated on Monday, November 14, and Grand Bahama Health Services has organized a series of events to inform the public about the non-communicable disease.

As the number increases worldwide, Clarke said the trend is also echoed here on Grand Bahama with 125 persons being admitted to Grand Bahama Health Services and diagnosed with the disease so far in 2011.
