The Delta Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. (Sigma) officially adopted Oakes Field Primary school and agreed to assist with school’s traditional and culturally-fused programs in an effort to develop balanced youth in The Bahamas. The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding in Nassau, Bahamas on September 10.

“We believe that Bahamian men should tangibly assist with shaping our nation’s future. Our fraternity internationally embarked on our Adopt-A-School initiative over 18 months ago and our local chapter selected Oakes Field Primary after a year of observation,” said Delta Epsilon Sigma chapter president Derek W. Smith Jr. “Youth, especially boys, need good men influences and role models in their lives. Our brotherhood is excited to partner with Oakes Field Primary and vow to assist with at least three (3) school led initiatives and one Sigma designed initiative.”

“We are appreciative, said Oakes Field Primary principal – Beryl Grey. “Phi Beta Sigma’s work in the community precedes them and we are happy that they approached us and asked how they could assist in the in our delivery of quality educational programs.”

During the two-year adoption, the fraternity will 1) Provide several textbooks to students of grades 1 through 6; 2) through its partnership with BREEF, serve as mentors for Eco-Schools program at the school; 3 assist with the coordination and execution of the Oakes Field Student Appreciation Day; and 4) manage the preparation of all grilled items for the school’s annual fair.
