Authorities Crackdown On Illegal Air Charters

CAD officials said the aviation industry is well regulated, but there is a major concern facing that sector.

CAD Standards Inspector, Randy Butler told a news conference on Friday that the Bahamian public is said to be contributing to the illegal charter services in the country.

He said, モQuite often they use these operators, but describe their business as a friendly service when in essence it is an operation Civil Aviation is hoping to curb.メ

But, to get to the bottom of this problem, officials in the Flight Standards Inspectorate are hoping members of the public would make it their business to get to know who the legal operators are, who must follow stipulations in accordance with industry standards.

Butler said these illegal operators are a menace to the traveling public, as they are offering themselves for service knowing they are not licensed to do so.

Officials said the public must be aware that in the event of an incident involving injuries or even loss of life, there is no recourse for compensation as no insurance company would provide coverage of an illegitimate air charter operation.

The officials noted that if the Bahamians who use these services come forward and identify the culprits, then the authorities would be able to halt the illegal charter operations and prosecute those involved.

But, it was also noted that many people are not telling the truth, and are prepared to swear that they had only caught a ride with a friend from one place to another.

モThis is a growing concern for us at Civil Aviation,メ said Butler. モWe have been trying to come to grips with it for a very long time but with no assistance from the public. We are urging members of the public to step up to the plate and help curb a growing trend in aviation.メ
