Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham asked the former director of Lands and Surveys Tex Turnquest to resign after he was unable to account for the approval of certain parcels of crown land, according to a senior public servant.
Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister David Davis made that revelation yesterday after he was asked why the government never updated the public on Turnquest's abrupt resignation in May.
"There was great public commentary on the matter," said Davis, who testified during a public hearing of the House of Assembly Select Committee on Lands held at Police Headquarters.
"In the interest of being able to report sensibly to the public, the director was called in by the minister responsible for lands (Ingraham) and asked to explain a number of things.
"A number of things in this respect is: How did these applications move through the system so quickly when there are others in the queue? How did it happen? Was it just a coincidence? How did all of these lands end up being listed with the same Realtor? Is that a coincidence? How did the same lawyer happen to deal with all of these transactions? Is that a coincidence? The then director was unable to give what the minister...deemed [were] satisfactory answers and so he was invited to resign."
Turnquest resigned after it was revealed that at least four parcels of crown land were approved for members of his family, according to information revealed during the hearing.
The parcels, which were approved in 2001 for the purpose of building dwelling homes, were reportedly later put up for sale.
