A brazen act of lawlessness by two young thugs on the premises at the Atlantis Resort, the country's most important tourist attraction, should have sent an urgent message to the Government that drastic steps must be taken immediately to bring the country's runaway crime problem under control.
Heaven forbid if a tourist, particularly an American visitor, had been shot and killed by a stray bullet. The potential catastrophic implications for the country's number one industry – tourism – are numbing. Since the vast majority of our tourists come from the United States, a report that a tourist was gunned down at a luxurious resort may very well have resulted in the relevant American government agency declaring that The Bahamas was not a safe place for Americans to visit. What's more, the resultant worldwide publicity would have sent the same warning message to countries in Europe and Asia and even those countries around the world that were not as familiar with The Bahamas before the international negative publicity the country received as a result of the Anna Nicole Smith scandal two years ago and the sensational trial of the individuals involved in the alleged attempted extortion of $25 million from actor John Travolta that ended in a "mistrial" less than two weeks ago.
Yet although no tourists were hurt, the local coverage given to the incident more likely than not had those persons at the Ministry of Tourism who are responsible for damage control working overtime to ensure that the incident has as benign an impact on country's bread-and-butter industry as possible.
