The Nassau Music Society has made an $80,000 donation to The College of The Bahamas to fund four major entrance scholarships of $5,000 per year, with total value of $20,000 per award.

This donation represents the Nassau Music Society's largest donation to The College of The Bahamas. It also represents the largest scholarship specifically for the study of music at The College. The donation will allow for one new music scholarship to be awarded every two years starting this academic year and ending in 2018.

The entrance scholarship is awarded to a first year full time music major, demonstrating the greatest degree of talent and potential success in the area of Music.

The donation is a generous contribution to The College's agenda to build diverse offerings of scholarships and financial aid to its students. Such funding ensures that The College can compete for top students who seek the advantage of a competitive academic experience, without the worry of financial burden.

President, Janyne M. Hodder is delighted that The College is the beneficiary of this new funding for the study of music.

"The Nassau Music Society's support for music scholarship is timely," she said. "We recently opened The College's newly renovated Performing Arts Centre, and know that the recipients of this funding will be the students who will command that stage in years to come. As we build The University of The Bahamas, it is important that we build great support for the arts, as an area that contributes to national development, not only directly in terms of the country's cultural enrichment, but also as a component of the economy."

Nassau Music Society President Patrick Thomson is pleased that the Society is able to help young students of music to achieve their goals in the field of music.

"We know there is a wealth of musical talent in the Bahamas and we would like to see some of that talent channeled into classical music," he noted. "We do hope that this donation to The College of the Bahamas will contribute to achieving that goal. On our side we need to thank our Corporate Sponsors – SG Private Banking, Pictet Bank & Trust, RoyalStar Assurance and Colina Imperial – for supporting us, allowing us to feature world class musicians who not only perform for young Bahamians but who also hold Master Classes for students and most importantly allow us to help The College with scholarship funds."

About The Nassau Music Society: The Nassau Music Society has been providing opportunities for its members and the wider Bahamian community to listen to good quality classical and jazz music since the 1960's. The Society was officially incorporated in 1961 and the first President was Clement Bethel. The aim of the Society is to promote and encourage the art of music by organizing concerts and other musical activities and to provide financial and other assistance to students of music. The Society raises funds to pay for its concerts, most of which do not make a profit, and to provide scholarship resources from its sponsors.
