A Stride for Life Walk expected to draw more than a thousand persons this Saturday has added a new dimension this year, becoming an official depository for books for school libraries.

In a partnership between The Cancer Society of The Bahamas and the Read to Succeed National Book Drive sponsored by the Bank of The Bahamas International, the walk that is aimed at heightening awareness about the importance of early detection in all cancers begins at 6 am at the Cancer Caring Centre, two doors north of ZNS off Collins Avenue. A tent will be set up to receive books and donors are asked to bring material suitable for students between the ages of 4 and 18. Books may be brought to the location throughout the morning.

"We initiated the book drive in response to numerous requests we had from school and local libraries, many in the Family Islands, asking for funds to buy books," said Dania Ferguson, Marketing Coordinator, Bank of The Bahamas. "It made sense to ask people across the country to dust off books their children had outgrown and donate them so we may distribute to schools and public libraries. Knowing how popular the Cancer Society Walk has been in past years, we approached them about being a drop-off depot and they agreed wholeheartedly - healthy mind, healthy body. It was a natural partnership."

The walk is attracting a host of well-known persons. Honorary co-chairs are 2006 Olympic gold medallists Shandra Sturrup and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie.

The BOB Read to Succeed Book Drive continues through November. Other drop boxes are located at Kelly's at the Mall at Marathon, City Market stores in New Providence and all BOB branches throughout The Bahamas. Donors are asked to bring books in good condition, fiction and non-fiction, for students in all grades. Books for older reading audiences will be directed to the Cat Island Library which the bank is assisting in rebuilding.
