Students turn out for 2nd Annual National Careers Day Fair
Minister of Education the Hon Carl Bethel was happy with the student turnout at the opening of the 2nd Annual National Careers Day Fair, Wednesday, October 28.
“I am delighted to be here, and to see so many of our wonderful young men and women from both the private and public schools take advantage of this golden educational opportunity,” said Mr Bethel.
The three-day event, which ends Thursday, October 29, is being held at the Sir Kendal Isaacs Gym.
Expressing gratitude to the Guidance Counselling Unit of the Department of Education, Mr Bethel said they are the people behind the scenes who partnered with other Government agencies, corporate and civic organizations with the objective of alleviating some of the challenges facing graduates entering today’s workplace.
“Being mindful of today’s economic situation, the Ministry and Department of Education felt that this careers fair was one way to make young people aware of the evolving employment needs in our country and to prepare them for a workforce that must remain globally competitive.”
Mr Bethel encouraged sixth and eleventh graders to create bright futures for themselves by exploring their abilities, talents, strengths and interests.
“You will fare better as a graduate entering the workplace if you are equipped with a good work ethic, planning skills and meaningful knowledge of career options and requirements.”
During the three-day fair, hundreds of students got an opportunity to speak with several exhibitors who represented a cross-section of careers in the country.
“I’m so excited to be here,” said Ricardo Edwards, a sixth grade St. John’s College student and aspiring scientist. “I’ve only been here for a short time, but I really learned a lot.”
Partners for the career fair included the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation, Kerzner International, Bahamas Maritime Authority, Bahamas Hotel Association, The College of The Bahamas, Public Hospitals Authority, Bahamas Information Services, The Lyford Cay Foundation, Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture, Ministry of Agriculture & Marine Resources, Bahamas Independent Secondary Schools Association, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, Bahamas Financial Services Board, Bahamas Business Solutions Ltd., KPMG, Rotary Club of East Nassau, Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise, Royal Bahamas Police Force, Department of Labour, Royal Bahamas Defence Fore, Ministry of Finance, Bahamian Contractors Association and Keiser University.
