Minister of Labour and Social Development Dion Foulkes last night invited frustrated Progressive Liberal Party supporters to join the Free National Movement, which he said is a more progressive force.

"To those in the PLP who are beginning to appreciate that the old guard of their party never left and cannot reform itself, we once again extend an invitation to join us," said Foulkes as he addressed the FNM Convention at the Wyndham Nassau Resort.

"If you want to pursue truly progressive policies and programs, just like those eight dissidents (who left the PLP and formed the FNM), just like (Prime Minister) Hubert Ingraham and numerous others, the big tent that is the Free National Movement will welcome you, will welcome you with open arms. We'll keep the torch light on for you, just in case."

Foulkes said, "In the FNM, we allow those with who we may disagree to speak openly and freely. We don't shut people up because they have a different point of view. This is why when we came to office in 1992 we smashed the state's monopoly on the broadcast media."

Today, Foulkes said the government is continuing to respond to the dramatic economic downturn facing the country.

He said the FNM government has hired thousands of Bahamian workers during what are extraordinarily tough times. While Foulkes did not point to specific jobs, his colleague minister Zhivargo Laing said the government is creating 5,000 jobs through its accelerated capital works program.
