A primary Bahamas tourist hot spot, Marina Village at Atlantis on Paradise Island, was thrown into terrifying chaos on around 9:30pm Halloween night when two gunmen opened fire, shooting a police officer and a security guard.
Terrified tourists leapt out of the way and ran for cover as bullets riddled the area. The police officer was shot multiple times in the head and upper body and is in the hospital in critical condition. The security guard was shot in the right shoulder and is in serious but stable condition.
The shooting took place after the cop and guard noticed two suspicious men. As they approached the men, the two thugs pulled out guns and started shooting without any regard for the many tourists in the area.
An witness said that he heard the gunshots but thought at first it had to be fireworks.
"I thought it must [have been] fireworks. I couldn't believe it when I heard that someone had been shot. I mean it's not like we were in the ghetto somewhere. This is Paradise Island. This is Atlantis. No one is shot here. It's shocking to say the least," he said.
According to Superintendent Elsworth Moss, chief of the Central Detective Unit, police apprehended one of the two bandits just after the shooting and the other turned himself in around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
