Detention Centre Cover-up Causing International Furor
What needs to be done is an honest self-appraisal of the expanding list of social ills and a sincere effort to correct the problems, not just cover them up.
The Bahamas Government tried another one of it's "sweep it under the rug" cover-ups with the Detention Centre abuse revelations, but it just doesn't work like it used to. The old Pindling government could pull it off because they controlled the press back then. But, thanks to a free press and the Internet, the Bahamas Government is finding it increasingly difficult to "whitewash" their many, many wrong-doings.
It seems to be the unofficial policy of the Bahamas to ignore and desperately try to cover-up the rising crime rate, rampant money laundering, discrimination against women, illegal alien smuggling, drug trafficking, corruption at Customs, Immigration and the Police Force, inhumane conditions at the prison, abuse at the detention centre, rising traffic fatalities, increasing poverty levels, alarming number of AIDS cases and a variety of other social ills so as not to negatively affect tourism.
What the Bahamas government apparently does not undertsand, is that the Bahamas tourism product will suffer far greater damage when the international community realizes what a bunch of lying crooks the Bahamas government really is.
What needs to be done is an honest self-appraisal of the expanding list of social ills and a sincere effort to correct the problems, not just cover them up and hope they'll go away. But, for that, we would need a "real" government, rather than a bunch of selfish, power mad, exploitive fools whose only real goal is to enrich themselves while they are in office.
