More than 4,000 hoteliers from across the globe provided opinions on the best overall travelers, as well as 10 specific categories grading popularity, behavior, manners, willingness to learn the language and try local cuisine, generosity, tidiness, volume, fashion sense and propensity to complain.

The Japanese won top prize and are considered by hoteliers across the globe as overall the best tourists. German and British tourists tied for second place, followed by the Canadians and Swiss. American tourists came in at number 11 overall.

Americans lead the way with putting effort into learning a few key sayings in the local language and sampling local delicacies. The French, Chinese and Japanese were the least likely to incorporate the local language, and the Chinese, Indians and Japanese have the least interest in the culinary styles of the places they visit. Americans are also considered the most generous, followed by the Canadians and Russians.

In contrast to American generosity and willingness to absorb local culture, they are considered to be noisy tourists, along with the Italians and British. Additionally, Americans are said to complain about accommodations, along with the Germans and French – and are also among the least tidy hotel guests. Lastly, Americans fall to the bottom of the list when it comes to fashion sense, with the ever stylish Italians and French taking top prize.

"Hoteliers are the experts when it comes to interacting with tourists, so as the busy summer travel season approaches and vacationers prepare for their own travel experiences, we thought it would be fun to present some of their common perceptions regarding tourists from all around the world," said Karyn Thale, travel expert, Expedia.com®. "We hope the results inspire Americans to keep up their generosity and cultural curiosity and convince them to leave the white tennis shoes and fanny packs at home!"

Source: Eturbonews.com

Because the Planet is perhaps the largest source of spam and website attacks in the United States.

The Bahamian mafia uses Planet servers to attack this site and other websites that portray less than flattering reviews of The Bahamas.

About 3,000 servers affected by the explosion may be in for some serious downtime. At least on Google.

Most small business owners are aware that high rankings on the major search engines are influenced by the number (and quality) of web pages that link to your site.

Links from popular and highly relevant web pages have a bigger impact on your search engine rankings than links from less popular or less relevant pages.

However, a new patent application with the name "Ranking Domains Using Domain Maturity" indicates that there may be another factor that helps search engines to determine the quality of a web page.

The abstract of the new patent application contains this food for thought:

"Ranking domains for search engines is provided herein. To rank a domain, contributing domains associated with the domain are identified. Additionally, the maturity of each of the contributing domains is determined.

A rank for the domain is then determined based at least in part on the maturity of each of the contributing domains. The domain rankings may then be used to order results for search queries."

This seems to indicate that Web pages that have links from older domains may be ranked higher than other domains in the search results. Newer domains may have to earn respect before being given higher rankings. Perhaps because newer domains are more likely to be spam or part of a link system that tries to skew search engine algorithms.

Domain names are cheap and some domain name registrars even offer free domain registration and trial periods. Spammers can easily take advantage of these offers to build a network of websites that link to each other (a so-called link farm).

The new patent describes how search engines can use the age of websites to determine the value of their links. For example, links from websites that are several years old could have a high effect on the search engine positions of the ranked sites while links from newly created websites might not have any effect at all.

Of course, the age of the websites that link to your site is not the only factor that influences the position of your website in the search result pages.

There are many factors that decide whether your website will get top positions on Google or not. But it is clear that a quality link from an established site like Bahamas B2B can be advantageous.

Submit your Bahamas-based website to Bahamas Web Directory on BahamasB2B.com. If your link is accepted for inclusion in the Directory, you will benefit in two ways. First, you'll receive extra traffic to your website. The Bahamas Directory has high search engine rankings for dozens of Bahamas-related keywords, attracting thousands of visitors per day. Plus, you will also benefit with a link from one of the oldest and most respected Bahamas websites.

We assume that every employee understands that they need to smile and make eye contact, yet many of the individuals that we hire have little experience with being a hotel guest except when they were on vacation with their parents. They lack empathy for what it feels like to be a hotel guest.

Customer Service consultant Carol Verret has published five tips (which I've slightly modified below) to improve hotel customer service with user generated reviews:

• Comments in User Generated Travel Reviews create empathy for the guest. This assumes that the manager exhibits respect for the user generated comments. Most young people completely understand community sites - it is part of their DNA. When they see the impact that guest service has on the experience of a guest, the guest becomes a person not just a check on a comment card. it helps them understand how important their role is.

• Ask employees how they would respond to a negative comment. The guest service team should be asked to participate in the formulation of a balanced response. Employees want to feel that their input is valuable - that their opinions are considered. This is a perfect way to get them involved, and the more we involve them the more committed they become.

• Use the guest comments to reinforce positive training behaviors. Congratulate your customer service team when a comment includes remarks on the friendliness of the staff or how a staff member went out of their way for a guest. Let the employees read for themselves how a poor guest experience impacts a real human, the guest, in their own words.

• Empower employees with responsibility for monitoring guest reviews online. Make the guest service team part of the process - assign responsibility to the team for monitoring and printing out reviews from review sites. Copy and distribute them for the next meeting so that team members can make comments and suggest solutions.

• Design a card to be given at checkout to every guest with the URL of the Bahamas-Travel.info Travel Reviews. This is a brilliant idea that one hotel thought up and implemented. Every time a guest responds positively to the question 'How was your stay?' hand them a card with the URL of Bahamas-Travel.info, or another review site, and ask them to write a review of their experience.

Verret says that every hospitality manager and supervisor can create a collaborative community-based culture of customer service in their specific areas. Managers and supervisors who express disdain for the reviews on the user generated sites transmit to their employees that they don't care about the 'community of guests' and if the manager and/ or supervisor doesn't care then why should the guest service associates!

Carol Verret Consulting & Training offers customer service training for managers and associates in the areas of sales, revenue management and customer service, primarily but not exclusively to the hospitality industry. E-newsletters allow you to deliver newsworthy and useful information to recipients who opt in to your mailing list and who can opt out at any time.

When publishing and e-mailing newsletters, be sure to only use opt-in mailing lists. Send your newsletter only to those who have opted-in by providing their e-mail addresses to your company for the purpose of receiving your newsletter. You can also send it to friends, vendors, customers or prospects of your business who have requested similar information in the past.

To ensure that your list includes only those who want to receive your mailings, include an opt-out offer at the conclusion of each newsletter.

Consider your e-mail address lists important assets of your company. Protect the addresses of recipients by hiding addresses when mailing the same message to multiple people. You can do this by entering your own address in the "to" line of the address box, and entering all other addresses as blind carbon copies. Or, use a professional newsletter distribution service.

Be sure to comply with the CAN Spam ruling.

Create a useful newsletter and your subscription list will continually grow.

Generate interest in your newsletter by including a link to your newsletter sign-up page and offering free subscriptions on your Web site and in other marketing materials.

Use your newsletter to promote your Web site and products by featuring links to your homepage and important site pages. If your newsletter references a particular product, for instance, be sure to include a link directly to that page on your site.

Always include your physical address and telephone number, so that those who want to talk to a person have the contact information they need.

Newsletters can benefit your business by encouraging frequent communications and web site visits, delivering news, providing answers to frequently asked questions and conveying tips, instructions, advice and other useful information.

Subscribe to The Bahamas Newsletter from Bahamas B2B.

Every business should have a web site that, at a minimum, acts as an online brochure for the company.

When designing your company web site, try to remember that the number one reason people visit Web sites is for information. You have to give people a benefit for visiting your site. Many companies, new to the Web, don't fully understand this. Some companies publish nothing but a straight sales pitch online, telling site visitors how great their product is. That simply won't cut it on the Web. You must keep in mind "what’s in it for the customer?" You must talk about your customer's needs, and how your product fulfills them.

So, not only has the site got to look good and present a professional image, it has to provide some useful information. The old saying 'content is king!' is still a valid mantra on the Web. I am not talking about divulging corporate secrets or writing doctoral dissertations, but you should be prepared to give away something, information at least, for free. It's the starting point for building up a relationship with your visitors.

Find out why you need to be online and What Makes a Web Site Successful for ideas on how to make your web presence more effective.

Be sure to include an easy to find "Contact" page that provides your address and phone number. However, with all the email spam in today's cyberspace, you may want to consider having an online form where site visitors can submit an email to you, rather than posting your email address.

You can find a list of competent Bahamas Web Designers in the Bahamas Directory.

If you have the time, and want to build your own site, you can use our Bahamas Web Builder. It is a fast, easy way to build and maintain your own site. The Web Builder features tools that allow you to incorporate into your site all the latest bells and whistles without knowing a thing about HTML or programming, and without spending a fortune on web development.

If your company is not online, you are missing out on one of the most powerful tools for building your business in today's global marketplace.

Yet, the web is still probably one of the most underutilized resources available to the small business person.

The Internet can also be one of the cheapest ways to promote your business and obtain free promotion and publicity, providing you are willing to spend the time it takes to make waves.

Though only a few businesses rely on the Internet as the sole or even the primary means for promotion or publicity, many companies today employ Internet technologies to some degree in their marketing mix.

Over the next few days, I will explore several of the ways that you can put the Internet to work as a powerful promotion and publicity-generating tool for your company.

First, start blogging

A "blog" (short for Web log) is an online diary or electronic journal made available for public viewing. It is also the fastest, easiest and possibly cheapest way to establish a web presence. You can even set up a blog for free. Google offers a free blogging service at www.blogger.com, while TypePad, and a myriad of other blogging tools, can be purchased for a small fee.

Increasingly, companies are publishing their own blogs as a way to reach targeted audiences directly or to communicate internally within their organizations.

Use your blog to establish an online identify for yourself or your company and to reflect your personality or corporate viewpoint. Create a Profile page that tells what you do, how you do it, and how you provide value to your clients. Make sure you have a way for clients and potential clients to contact you.

Write short, insightful articles, using an informal tone, on subjects which relate to your business. Make the articles informative and feature links to other Web sites. Try to update your blog frequently.

For free step-by-step instructions on how to start a blog, go to www.blogger.com/start.

Also, read Jeff Worio's informative article on Blogging for Business.

Tomorrow, I will talk about creating a web site for your company, another way to use the Internet to generate promotion and publicity for your business.

One of the great features of the Web is that people with similar interests can get together, without regard for time or location, to share information, thoughts, plans and ideas. There are specialized communities of interest, for virtually any topic, from pets and gardening to politics and the sublime. Businesses can specifically target communities of interest across the globe. Individualizing the Web experience allows people and businesses to raise awareness on almost any topic.

Join an online forum where topics of interest to you are being discussed. For Bahamas issues try the Bahamas Community Message Board. There are several forums and topics ranging from current news and events to the environment, society and culture. There is even a community announcement forum to publicize events and notices.

Here are some other simple ways that one can use the Web to increase public awareness on specific issues:

Targeted mailings: Start an e-mail contact list of like-minded individuals who are interested in learning more about your issue. When you come across articles, news, or relevant information, forward it to everyone on this list.

TIP: It is best to do this using a professional mailing programme so you do not abuse the privacy of others by copying the email to dozens of people, with all the email addresses visible to others. A lowcost mailing solution can be found at e-Newsletter Service.

Email Signature: Create an email signature to add a clever phrase or quote that's meaningful to you into the tagline of all of your e-mails. A simple e-mail signature will remind others of the importance of your issue, giving them an opportunity to educate themselves about the topic. You'd be surprised by the impact of such a simple thing!

Create a Website: Make your own website in support of your cause. If your organization has a budget, engage the services of a competent website developer. If money is scarce, use a free or low-cost website builder or create your site from scratch by visiting a few of the thousands of how-to sites on the Internet with free templates and even free server space. Once you've created a focus for your issue there are countless ways to use the Web to educate the public and make your point. There's no reason to put this off any longer, the time to start is now!

Start a Blog: Blogging is all the rage and there seems to be no better way to disseminate information faster than via the "Blogosphere". Google offers a completely free blogging service which allows you host your blog on their server or your own. This blog is created using the Blogger service. Plenty of other free blogging services and software are available by searching for the word "blogging" in Google. It takes five minutes to set up a blog and the ability to raise awareness of your issue is enormous.

TIP: Your website or blog will get more respect and better search engine rankings (more traffic) if you publish it under your own domain name. Find tips on selecting a domain name, register a domain name and find other business services by visiting the Bahamas B2B Business Services page.

If you or your organization already have a website, then pump up the volume by including fresh, relevant information and news about your specific issue. Use your site to educate people about your topic. This is one way to get the word out with very little effort.

There are also a variety of Bahamas community services available on Bahamas B2B that can help spread the word on issues of importance to you. Try posting a message on the BahamasB2B Forum, place a free classified ad, or write a feature article that highlights your topic or issue and submit it to BahamasB2B and other online media. Companies can submit business press releases which will receive a local and international audience.

Despite all the spin, little progress has been made in the actual development of the Internet here.

Bahamians are, for the most part, missing the boat.

Nearly six years ago, when Bahamas B2B was first launched, there was plenty of excitement surrounding the development of a Bahamian e-society. The Bahamas Financial Servies Board (BFSB) formed several committees to examine the Internet's potential for The Bahamian business community and to make a proposal to the government.

After two years of long time consuming and involved meetings it was determined by most of the people involved that they were wasting their time. Many stopped participating. By the time the proposal was completed the dot.com bubble had burst and the government basically shelved the initiative.

There was a feeble attempt to make it appear as if the Bahamas was keeping up with the rest of the world in the form of some legislation pertaining to "e-commerce". Of the three bills that were proposed two were passed. The third bill, the most important one, dealing with electronic security and privacy was not. Hence, the concepts explored by the BFSB's e-Commerce Working Group were not feasible to develop.

Because of this typically Bahamian dithering the Internet never really took off here in The Bahamas as it has in other developing nations around the globe.

Five years ago, The Bahamas was five years behind the ball, so to speak. Today, we are even further behind.

The government continues to talk and posture; various companies flirt with the possibilities offered by the Web; but there is no big cohesive national movement to get the Bahamas truly "online". Other nations that have invested the time and money to educate their citizenry on such matters have reaped both economic and social rewards.

Here in The Bahamas, there are precious few online services offered to the public - rudimentary banking and crude online bill payments to name a few. Far too many Bahamian businesses still don't even have websites. Some do not even use email (gasp). These are usually the harried people who rush around town whining that they never have enough time, yet are doing nothing to take advantage of the time-saving opportunities the Web presents.

In fact, the Internet is tremendously under-exploited by most Bahamian companies and individuals. Many Bahamians are not online, some of the ones that are, are clueless about the true potential the Internet offers. Some do not even know how to properly operate their computers, as evidenced by the tremendous number of hacked Bahamian computers, controlled by robots to send out spam.

Rather than leading the way, the government websites (except for the Ministry of Tourism's sites) are among the worst designed and most dysfunctional sites in the country.

Bahamians also have their government to thank for the pitiful state of our telecommunications industry; monopolized by a company that should, long ago, have been privatized. Long distance rates are outrageous, yet the use of advanced Internet technology such as VOIP is illegal, presumably to keep the money-losing telephone company from losing more money.

Most big US-based online retailers will not ship to the Bahamas because of our reputation as a rouge nation. PayPal, the world's largest web payment gateway, refuses to do business here because of our secret banking system, which attracts money launderers and financial services scum from around the world.

There was promise at the beginning. The FNM government, the guys who opened up broadcasting in the nation after years of government control and censorship, were gung-ho on the development of the Internet.

When Alvin Smith was in charge of BAIC, he worked with Bahamas B2B to create a little website that could have developed into an emerging force for raising Internet awareness among small Bahamian businesses.

However, before the site could even get going, the PLP came into power. Despite numerous offers of free web development from Bahamas B2B, the boys at BAIC have been so wrapped up in their own scandals that they have never even updated the existing pages. What a waste.

Despite the unfriendly environment, Bahamas B2B has continued to promote the web industry here in The Bahamas and will continue to do so.

Towards that goal, I will use this blog to examine some of the ways in which the Internet can benefit small businesses and explore methods which can assist companies and individuals in taking full advantage of the Web's many powerful advantages to commerce.

Stay tuned.
