\u201dCultural Fusion,\u201d a standard flower show and plant sale, is set for 2:30 p.m. \u00a0to 6 p.m., Saturday, April 25 at the Nassau Yacht Club. Admission is free.<\/p>\n

\u201cInspired by the extraordinary success of last year\u2019s \u2018Splash,\u2019 our \u00a0first standard show in 17 years, our members are hard at work on arrangements for \u2018Cultural Fusion,\u2019 inspired by our international focus \u00a0an origins as a garden club for 55 years,\u201d says Ms. Caroline Albury, Show Chairman and Past President of the International Garden Club (ICG).<\/p>\n
She explains that the term, \u201cStandard Flower Show\u201d is the official title of a flower show conforming to standards established by National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC).<\/p>\n
Preparations are in final stages, according to Ms. Albury with a final working meeting set for Friday, April 17. Members have enjoyed a year of events designed to make the show momentous, from attending international workshops to others conducted locally by visiting experts.<\/p>\n
\u201cJudges were blown away last year by the quality of the designs and their execution. There were extraordinary numbers of 90 plus scores, sometimes three in a class,\u201d explains Ms.Albury, who personally won six design blue ribbons including top awards: Designers Choice Award and Award of Design Excellence for \u00a0\u201cOcean Jewels,\u201d an underwater design; Table Artistry \u00a0Award for \u201cCasino\u201d; \u00a0She also scored 95 Plus for \u201cBahama Breeze,\u201d \u201cJunkanoo\u201d and \u201cRake n Scrape.\u201d And 90 in “Island Hopping” \u00a0\u00a0a synergistic Design. This class had 3 scores of 90 and one of 95 plus.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have many \u00a0talented designers and growers in our club, including Janet Brown, Bobbi Pyfrom, Erica Bower, Susan Roberts and Debbie Krukowski and in the second generation, Cousins Caroline Albury, Charlotte Constantakis, and Susan Davies,\u201d says Sara Parker, Past President.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are not just arrangements. \u00a0They are sculptures using flowers and plant material as the medium,\u201d comments Chandra Parker, another second generation member, who won her first arranging trophy at about age 8.<\/p>\n

Section B \u201cOther Side of the World,\u201d eligible for Designer\u2019s Choice Award
\n\u201cChina,\u201d \u00a0in the manner of Traditional Oriental Style;
\n\u201cAustralia,\u201d an underwater design;
\n\u201cRussia,\u201d \u00a0a multi-rhythmic design.<\/p>\n
Section C Miniatures \u00a0\u201cClose to Home,\u201d eligible for the Petite Award
\n\u201cBahamas,\u201d a small creative design;
\n\u201cCanada,\u201d a traditional design;
\n\u201cUnited States of America\u201d an illuminary design in a black light box.<\/p>\n
Special Exhibits include \u201cHop Skip and a Jump\u201d, \u00a0including \u201cJamaica, a mobile design staged within a frame.<\/p>\n

Design awards, given to the highest scoring exhibits in eligible classes, include: The Table Artistry Award in functional and exhibition table classes; Designers Choice Award, for creative classes; Petite Award for miniature or small designs; and Award of Design Excellence, awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in the entire Design Division.<\/p>\n

Horticultural Fusion<\/p>\n
The Horticulture section of \u201cCultural Fusion\u201d is expected to offer hibiscus the size of dinner plates, spectacular orchids, bromeliads, desert \u00a0roses and ferns \u00a0according to Susan Davies, IGC President and Entries Chairman for the division.<\/p>\n
Last year Mary Lou Saunders won The Award of Horticultural Excellence for one of her massive orchids ( plus 95 plus for two other orchids) and a blue ribbon for each of her astonishingly perfect hibiscus flowers with \u00a0scores of 95 plus on \u00a0four of her hibiscus, one earning the Award of Merit. She also won the Arboreal Award for her Acalypha \u201cMatch Me If you Can\u201d.<\/p>\n
Plants or cuttings earning 95 points or more are eligible for awards including: the coveted Award of Horticultural Excellence, for the highest scoring exhibit in the entire Horticultural Division; Awards of Merit, awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in divisions for roses, hibiscus, bromeliads, other perennials, vines and climbing plants; the Arboreal Award for the top scoring plant in sections for flowering and non flowering trees and shrubs; and the Grower\u2019s Choice Award to the top three plants in \u00a0container grown foliage plants, flowering plants or plants with colourful bracts and succulents and cacti.<\/p>\n

A plant sale will be conducted by \u00a0Flamingo Nursery which is famous for its orchids, and David Higgs, Sarah Lobosky and Cindy Wilde.<\/p>\n
Tea and light refreshments will be available.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1960, The International Garden Club strives to \u201cpromote interest in and knowledge of gardening and of all things relating to the enjoyment of the natural beauty of The Bahama Islands\u201d and to \u201cencourage the promotion of friendship and understanding among persons of all races and nationalities who share our interest in gardening.\u201d<\/p>\n
As outlined by NGC, \u201cThe purposes of a Standard Flower Show are to educate club members and the viewing public, to stimulate interest in horticulture and floral design, to provide an outlet for creative expression, and to convey to the community the objectives of NGC.\u201d<\/p>\n
