Monday, August 23, 2010.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jimena Navarrete, a\u00a0 22-year-old brunette from Mexico, was named Miss Universe in\u00a0 Las Vegas yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The first runner-up was Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps,\u00a0 while Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, was second runner-up.<\/p>\n<p>Navarrete, a nature enthusiast from Guadalajara, defeated\u00a0 favourites  from Ireland, the Philippines and Venezuela to become\u00a0 the 59th winner  of the crown in a show broadcast live around\u00a0 the world.<\/p>\n<p>She received the crown from reigning Miss Universe Stefania\u00a0  Fernandez, Venezuela\u2019s second winner in as many years. In a\u00a0 major  shock, this year\u2019s Miss Venezuela failed to make it past\u00a0 the first cut,  when the 83 contestants were whittled down to\u00a0 15.
