{"id":12563,"date":"2011-10-04T08:29:57","date_gmt":"2011-10-04T12:29:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=12563"},"modified":"2011-10-04T08:31:20","modified_gmt":"2011-10-04T12:31:20","slug":"conference-of-caribbean-judiciary-heads-hosted-in-the-bahamas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2011\/10\/conference-of-caribbean-judiciary-heads-hosted-in-the-bahamas","title":{"rendered":"Conference of Caribbean Judiciary Heads Hosted In The Bahamas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Judiciary will host the 10th Meeting of the Conference of Caribbean Chief Justices and Heads of Judiciary and the 2nd Biennial Conference of the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers (CAJO) from Wednesday, October 5th\u00a0 to Saturday, October 8th,\u00a0 2011 at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, Nassau, The Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>Caribbean Heads of Judiciary hold 10th Meeting in Nassau<br \/>\nCaribbean Chief Justices and Heads of Judiciary will focus on the impact of technology on the administration of justice when they convene for their 10th Meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting as the Conference of Heads of Judiciary of the Caribbean which was established in 1998, they will explore a range of topics under the theme: Emerging\u00a0 Technologies-Challenges\u00a0 and Opportunities. These topics include Overview of Litigation -Support\u00a0 Technologies to Enhance Court and Case Administration: What is on the Horizon and The Rise of Social Networking and\u00a0 the\u00a0 Related\u00a0 issues\u00a0 facing\u00a0 Courts. The\u00a0 Heads\u00a0 will\u00a0 also\u00a0 discuss\u00a0 justice\u00a0 sector\u00a0 reform initiatives for the region during a meeting with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).<\/p>\n<p>The meeting will be chaired by the Chief Justice of Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Justice Ivor Archie, with the participation of eleven (11) Judiciaries under the kind assistance of the host Judiciary, and the Chief Justice of the Bahamas, Sir Michael Barnett. It will be followed immediately by the Second Conference of the Caribbean Association of Judicial Officers (CAJO).<\/p>\n<p>BACKGROUND<br \/>\nThe Conference was established by the Heads of Judiciary as a forum at which regional Heads of Judiciary can meet to discuss issues of mutual interest.\u00a0 Among the objectives of the Conference are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to examine judicial problems, whether of a national or regional nature and to arrive at better solutions to them; and<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 to encourage, foster and promote the development of Caribbean jurisprudence.<\/p>\n<p>The first meeting of the Conference was held from July 25th to 26th,1998 in Trinidad. It was then called &#8216;The Commonwealth Caribbean Heads of Judiciary Meeting&#8217;. The 9th\u00a0 Meeting of the Conference, themed Maintenance\u00a0 of Trust and Confidence in the Judiciary of the Commonwealth Caribbean, was also held in Port of Spain from June 5 to 6 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The membership of the Conference is as follows:<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of The Bahamas<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The President of the Court of Appeal, The Bahamas<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of Barbados<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of Belize<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The President of the Court of Appeal, Belize<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of Bermuda,<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of the Cayman Islands<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chancellor of Guyana<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of Guyana<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Vice-president de la Cour de Cassation de la Republique, Haiti<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of Jamaica<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The President of the Court of Appeal Jamaica<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of the Republic of Suriname<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of Trinidad and Tobago<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The President of The Caribbean Court of Justice<\/p>\n<p>In some countries in the region, while the Head of the Judiciary is the Chief Justice, there is\u00a0 also\u00a0 a\u00a0 President\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 Court\u00a0 of\u00a0 Appeal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 These\u00a0 countries\u00a0 include\u00a0 Jamaica,\u00a0 The Bahamas\u00a0 and Belize.\u00a0\u00a0 In Guyana,\u00a0 the Chancellor\u00a0 is the Head\u00a0 of the Judiciary\u00a0 and the President of the Court of Appeal, while the Chief Justice is the Head of the High Court.
