Second to cross the line was Ocean<\/p>\n<p>Warrior, winner of the Abaco Half Hull for the best performance by a Bahamian boat. Lenjohn Van der Wel, with two round the world races under his belt, and a journey from South Africa to The Bahamas, helmed the Class 40&#8242;, finishing just over four hours behind D&#8217;Amelio&#8217;s 55-footer that took top honours after finishing in race in 17 hours, 23 minutes and 55 seconds &#8212; a fast race 11 hours ahead of the last of the fleet, but a time that left the all-time record of 14 hours, 26 minutes and 39 seconds untouched.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions were nearly perfect for a downwind run from the time the boats left Government Cut in Miami at 11 am November 10. Steady northwesterly winds pushed the fleet toward Nassau. They crossed the Gulf Stream, slid past the landmark lighthouses of Great Isaacs Cay and Great Sturrup and created a colourful spectacle with all sails flying &#8212; \u00a0 spinnakers, mains, small jibs and bloopers &#8211;as they crossed the finish line in Nassau Harbour, Denali coming in under a moon and starlit sky with an official race committee boat waiting at 4:28 am.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15664\" style=\"width: 486px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15664 \" title=\"drummer-dunkley\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/drummer-dunkley.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/drummer-dunkley.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/drummer-dunkley-150x69.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/drummer-dunkley-250x115.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Different  Drummer, a 1982 Fast 40 skippered by Frank Atkinson out of the Coconut  Grove Sailing Club, won first place in fleet A of the PHRF class.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15667\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15667\" style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15667 \" title=\"cup\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/cup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/cup.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/cup-150x107.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/cup-250x178.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15667\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The  prestigious Nassau Cup was presented by Tyrone Sawyer, far left,  director of sports tourism at the Ministry of Tourism, at the Nassau  Yacht Club to Micheal D&#39;Amelio of the yacht Denali, first over the line  and winner of the IRC class with a 176-mile race time of 17 hours, 23  minutes, 55 seconds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Achilles Keel, a First 45&#8242; skippered by Andrew Pike, the other Bahamian entry, crossed the finish line last with a race time of 28 hours, 35 minutes, but Pike called it &#8220;a great race, great fun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The historic event, first sailed in 1934 and one of the oldest ocean races in the northern hemisphere, was sailed under the auspices of the Bahamas Sailing Association with the support of the Ministry of Tourism.
