The recipients represent Long Island Acklins, Crooked Island, Inagua and San Salvador, with eight hailing from Long Island alone.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Disaster Relief Committee of Rotary Bahamas, Peter Goudie, encouraged the recipients to take the skills they will learn and contribute to their respective islands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want you to go back, establish your own businesses and help your own people,\u201d said Mr. Goudie.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-168856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-1.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-1\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-1.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-1-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-1-250x148.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was reiterated by the chamber\u2019s Chief Executive Officer, Edison Sumner, who said it is expected that the students would return to their islands and help build the economies.<\/p>\n<p>One year ago, the category four hurricane unleashed its fury upon the central and southern Bahamas, destroying homes, toppling buildings and leaving severe flooding in its wake.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-168857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-2.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-2\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-2.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-2-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-2-250x148.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2016 graduate of the Inagua All Age School, Jasmine Pyfrom, considers herself to be one of the \u201cfortunate students\u201d to be awarded the scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful because many of us may not have been able to continue our education beyond high school,\u201d said the young woman.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of fellow recipients, Jasmine committed to using the skills they will attain, to assist their home towns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks for not just giving us a fish, but making it possible for us to learn how to fish,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-168859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-3.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-3\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-3.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-3-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/btvi-3-250x148.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, BTVI\u2019s chairman and Rotary\u2019s Immediate Past District 7020 Governor, Felix Stubbs, encouraged the students to take full advantage of the opportunity presented to them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have an obligation to share your success, particularly in the islands you represent. You are ambassadors of what good collaboration can be\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>BTVI\u2019s president, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, thanked Rotary and the chamber, stating that the effort is a shining example of their strong commitment to education, as the students\u2019 continuation of higher education was threatened by Joaquin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recognize that the devastation caused by hurricane Joaquin has had serious financial implications for thousands of citizens, resulting in monies having to be redirected for rebuilding purposes. Therefore, this collaboration will alleviate some of the financial hardship incurred.
