{"id":16961,"date":"2012-01-18T08:29:07","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T13:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=16961"},"modified":"2012-01-18T09:48:02","modified_gmt":"2012-01-18T14:48:02","slug":"warned-against-harvesting-undersize-crawfish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/01\/warned-against-harvesting-undersize-crawfish","title":{"rendered":"Bahamians Warned Against Harvesting Undersize Crawfish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-16772\" title=\"caution\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/caution.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/caution.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/caution-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Bahamians face prosecution \u201cto the fullest extent of the law\u201d for harvesting undersize crawfish, Agriculture and Marine resources Minister Lawrence S \u2018Larry\u2019 Cartwright stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe practice of harvesting undersize crawfish presents a clear and present danger to the crawfish industry,\u201d he told a press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf left unchecked, this practice will lead to the eventual depletion of the stock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, the position of The Bahamas as a leading exporter of crawfish could be \u201cseverely damaged,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForeign buyers increasingly accept products only from well-managed and sustainable fisheries,\u201d Mr Cartwright said. \u201cConsequently The Bahamas as a whole stands to lose if the harvesting of undersize crawfish continues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also present at the press conference were director of marine resources Michael Braynen, deputy director Edison Deleveaux, permanent secretary Cresswell Sturrup, and administrative officer Jacqueline Fox.<\/p>\n<p>Defence Force and Department of Marine Resources in Grand Bahama and Abaco have been seizing a number of undersize crawfish, said Mr Cartwright.<\/p>\n<p>Those found in possession of them were arrested and charged before the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Fisheries regulations state that no one shall take, have in their possession, or sell any undersize crawfish.<\/p>\n<p>Persons in charge of vessels engaged in crawfishing shall ensure that they carry measuring gauges capable of determining the legal size, said the Minister.<\/p>\n<p>The warning also went out to buyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey too contribute to the non-sustainability of the resource by providing a market for undersize crawfish,\u201d the Minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Enforcement officers are monitoring mail boats for the landing of undersize crawfish.<\/p>\n<p>The scientific basis for the minimum size limit is to ensure at least one spawning season for crawfish before they are of legal size, Mr Cartwright explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The authorities) will continue to monitor the activities of the Bahamian fishing industry and will take measures as necessary in accordance to the Fisheries Regulations and Act of the Bahamas,\u201d the Minister warned.<\/p>\n<p>He said the crawfish industry remains \u201can essential component\u201d of the Bahamian economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It generates an estimated $60 million to $70 million annually and employs approximately 9,000 Bahamians full-time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is noteworthy that some of the country\u2019s highest per capita incomes are to be found in Family Island fishing communities,\u201d said Mr Cartwright.<\/p>\n<p>Also there is a direct linkage between the tourism industry and crawfish industries, he noted.<\/p>\n<p>By Gladstone Thurston<br \/>\nBahamas Information Services<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bahamians face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law for harvesting undersize crawfish&#8230;
