With this year marking the 50th year of International Literacy Day, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) launched a Read. Write. Communicate: Community Project to encourage youngsters to read.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-171722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-5.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-school-literacy-5\" width=\"260\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-5.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-5-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-5-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/>BTVI\u2019s staff and faculty, with the help of Urban Renewal, donated over 300 new and gently used books to Claridge Primary School, the nearest public primary school to the institution.<\/p>\n<p>The BTVI team sprang into action with staff and faculty donating books or money to buy them for the worthy cause, with the culmination being the presentation at Claridge Primary\u2019s Literacy Assembly on the 29th September under the theme, \u2018A Journey Through Bahamian Literature.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-171723\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-7.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-school-literacy-7\" width=\"550\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-7.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-7-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-7-250x148.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-171724\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-6.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-school-literacy-6\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-6.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-6-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-6-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>BTVI\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Hadassah Hall, said the initiative came about after discovering statistics published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on International Literacy Day, September 8th. The UNESCO Institute for Statistics reported in 2015 that 757 million adults including 115 million youth (15 &#8211; 24 years), cannot read or write a simple sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statistics are staggering, particularly knowing how fundamental reading is to education, and life itself. We do not want the students of Claridge Primary to be among those numbers,\u201d said Ms. Hall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-171725\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-8.jpg\" alt=\"btvi-school-literacy-8\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-8.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-8-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/btvi-school-literacy-8-250x188.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you are completing an application form for a job or college, reading a flight board at an airport, reading the dosage on a medicine bottle or sitting in an exam, the ability to read, write and communicate one\u2019s thoughts is something we do daily.
