{"id":18288,"date":"2012-02-21T19:30:38","date_gmt":"2012-02-22T00:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=18288"},"modified":"2012-02-21T19:30:38","modified_gmt":"2012-02-22T00:30:38","slug":"bahamas-chefs-get-serious-about-local-produce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/02\/bahamas-chefs-get-serious-about-local-produce","title":{"rendered":"Bahamas Chefs Get Serious About Local Produce"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_18289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18289\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18289\" title=\"andros-farm\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/andros-farm.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/andros-farm.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/andros-farm-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A farm in Andros (BIS Photo\/Gladstone Thurston)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A number of Bahamian chefs were on hand this weekend in North Andros to look at what could become a dynamic agricultural centre in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The weekend tour, which included chefs from the One &amp; Only Ocean Club, the Atlantis Resort, Breezes SuperClubs and others, was organized by the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>According to BAIC executive chairman Edison Key, New Providence-based buyers could represent a market for the country\u2019s Family Islands that could be as high as $500 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the value of the food products we import into this country; much of which we can produce right here,\u201d Key said.<\/p>\n<p>The chef\u2019s team toured farms, the agroindustrial park, the docks and the government\u2019s packing house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe chefs were all very excited by what they saw,\u201d said Deanne Gibson, culinary tourism manager for the Bahamian Ministry of Tourism. \u201cI am even more pleased that the chefs are interested in producing indigenous dishes using these products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trip was part of a series of conferences BAIC has been arranging to connect New Providence with farmers in the country\u2019s Family Islands.<\/p>\n<p>North Andros has become a centre for agricultural promise in the Bahamas, particularly its North Andros Agri-Industrial Park, which is already producing a number of crops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see great things in the future for chefs and farmers working together,\u201d said Emmanuel Gibson, chef at the Ocean Club. \u201cI believe we can get better products grown locally, the cost to consumers will be less, and the products will be fresher. We just have to come up with ways to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no more time for talking,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to get people who are serious and make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S.S.
