NASSAU, Bahamas — The Bahamas applauds Germany for maintaining its economic status during the current financial crisis in the European Union, as a new ambassador was accredited to this country.<\/p>\n

His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, Governor General made the statement on the Occasion of the Presentation of Letters of Credence by His Excellency Josef Beck, accrediting him Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was held in the Drawing Room of Government House, Thursday, March 8, 2012.
\nAmbassador Beck also paid a courtesy call on the Rt Hon Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister; the Hon Tommy Turnquest, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and other officials.<\/p>\n

The Bahamas and Germany established ties in 1973. Since 2009, Bahamians were able to travel to Germany without a Schengen Visa; Germany being a Shengen country.<\/p>\n

In December 2011, The Bahamas and Germany signed a Tax Information Exchange Agreement a requirement of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development of which Germany is a member.<\/p>\n

Based on these achievements and other bilateral relations between both countries, Sir Arthur said he was confident that Ambassador Beck\u2019s tenure would prove productive and fruitful in furthering these relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bahamas appreciates the efforts of both Germany and the European Union to highlight the vulnerability of Small Island Developing States such as The Bahamas in important areas relating to climate change and sustainable development,\u201d Sir Arthur said.<\/p>\n

He also commended the strength of Germany\u2019s economy, in the face of challenging economic times in the European Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the current economic crisis in the European Union, Germany has distinguished itself as a country of commendable fiscal responsibility and stability,\u201d Sir Arthur said.<\/p>\n

He also applauded Germany\u2019s longstanding political leadership in Europe in the context of integration and at the United Nations, especially with respect to the important historic debate UN Security Council Reform.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bahamas welcomes your pledge to improve ties between our two countries, inter alia, by stimulating further German investment in The Bahamas, Sir Arthur told the ambassador.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Bahamas also wishes to acknowledge the accreditation of a German Ambassador to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This speaks volumes about the commitment of the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany to this significant institution for our region.\u201d<\/p>\n
