{"id":21312,"date":"2012-05-02T09:58:53","date_gmt":"2012-05-02T13:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=21312"},"modified":"2012-05-02T10:00:50","modified_gmt":"2012-05-02T14:00:50","slug":"man-gets-57-year-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/05\/man-gets-57-year-sentence","title":{"rendered":"Man Gets 57-Year Sentence For Businessman&#8217;s Murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14606\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"gavel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gavel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gavel.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/gavel-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>A man who carried out the \u201cpremeditated murder\u201d of popular businessman Keith Carey during an armed robbery was jailed for 57 years yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Carey, who operated a gas station, willingly handed over a deposit bag that contained $40,000 when a gunman confronted him on the steps of the Bank of The Bahamas at Harrold Road on February 27, 2006, according to the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the gunman, whom the jury found was Glinton, shot Carey three times.<\/p>\n<p>A jury unanimously convicted Glinton of Carey\u2019s murder and armed robbery during a third trial on April 5, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>According to probation officer, Lisa Bowleg, Carey\u2019s widow, Michelle, told her, \u201cEach trial made it seem like it was just yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Roy Jones told Glinton that he had been found guilty of serious offenses for which he had shown no remorse. He added: \u201cFrom the evidence, the murder and armed robbery were premeditated and carried out in a brutal and merciless manner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that the murder has affected the standard of living of Carey\u2019s widow, Michelle, and their three daughters. Owing to the loss of the family\u2019s sole breadwinner, two of Carey\u2019s daughters could not complete their tertiary education, Bowleg reported.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the probation report, Jones said the crime had \u201caffected the dreams and aspirations\u201d of Carey\u2019s children.<\/p>\n<p>Glinton, a high school dropout, has maintained his innocence throughout all of his trials. The court heard that Glinton\u2019s father, who has sired 33 other children, was absent during his childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Although he did not finish school, Glinton obtained regular employment and his mother supplemented his income, the court heard.<\/p>\n<p>Another judge sentenced Glinton to death for Carey\u2019s murder on May 29, 2009, but the conviction and sentence were overturned on appeal in December of that year.<\/p>\n<p>Carey\u2019s widow told the probation officer that learning of Glinton\u2019s successful appeal was \u201cthe second worst thing that had ever happened to her, next to her husband\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carey said, \u201cKeith\u2019s life was taken in a flash but there seems to be no cost to spare Jamal Glinton\u2019s life.\u201d Darnell Dorsette appeared for the Crown.
