{"id":22002,"date":"2012-05-23T12:46:51","date_gmt":"2012-05-23T16:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=22002"},"modified":"2012-05-23T12:46:51","modified_gmt":"2012-05-23T16:46:51","slug":"al-jarrett-dies-at-69","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/05\/al-jarrett-dies-at-69","title":{"rendered":"Al Jarrett Dies At 69"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_22003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22003\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22003\" title=\"al-jarrett\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/al-jarrett.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/al-jarrett.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/al-jarrett-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Al Jarrett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Retired banker Alfred \u2018Al\u2019 Jarrett was remembered as a patriot with a great mind.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrett, a retired banker and former chairman of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation who was at the forefront of national discussion on the country\u2019s fiscal state, died at his West Bay Street home early yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He was 69.<\/p>\n<p>His long-time friend, Jones Communications CEO Wendall Jones, said Jarrett\u2019s family told him he died of a massive heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a nation builder of the highest order and a greater patriot the country would not find,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrett embarked on a career in banking more than 40 years ago and served the country in many capacities throughout his career.<\/p>\n<p>He served as a board member at the National Insurance Board, an investment analyst and stock broker for Deltec Securities in New York in the early 1970s before becoming managing director at Royal Bank of Canada FINCO.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrett was also a former chairman of Bank of The Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Works and Urban Development Philip Brave Davis said in a statement that Jarrett\u2019s passing meant The Bahamas \u201chas once again lost a great Bahamian son\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a patriot with a sound mind to build a better Bahamas,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party Bradley Roberts described Jarrett as the country\u2019s foremost expert on banking, finance and economics and as a \u201cfaithful and fearless warrior\u201d in his contributions to the development of the financial services sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Jarrett was very vocal and painfully honest as he engaged in vigorous policy debates with friends and colleagues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8230; He entertained some, he angered some, but he enlightened all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A day before Jarrett\u2019s death, Roberts, while a host on the More 94.9FM talk show \u2018Real Talk Live\u2019 with Ortland Bodie, had pointed to Jarrett\u2019s contributions while chairman of BEC.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey August Williams, Jarrett\u2019s friend and former<\/p>\n<p>colleague at Deltec Bank &amp; Trust Limited where Jarrett worked as a bank teller for approximately five years in the late 1960s, described him as an extremely honest person who cared for those around him.<\/p>\n<p>Williams also remembered Jarrett as an ardent sportsman and a great fan of baseball, who was a formidable force as shortstop in his earlier years.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrett is survived by his wife, Linda, his two sons Lamont and Marco, grandchildren, siblings and other loved relatives and friends.<\/p>\n<p>*Read more on Jarrett\u2019s death under TNG Online Business section.<\/p>\n<p>Royston Jones, The Nassau Guardian<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alfred \u2018Al\u2019 Jarrett, a retired banker and former chairman of the Bahamas Electricity Corporation, died yesterday of a heart attack.
