{"id":22042,"date":"2012-05-24T04:47:29","date_gmt":"2012-05-24T08:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=22042"},"modified":"2012-05-24T04:47:29","modified_gmt":"2012-05-24T08:47:29","slug":"attorney-sharon-wilson-returns-as-senate-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/05\/attorney-sharon-wilson-returns-as-senate-president","title":{"rendered":"Attorney Sharon Wilson Returns As Senate President"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_22043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22043\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22043\" title=\"sharon-wilson-snakeswoman\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/sharon-wilson-snakeswoman.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/sharon-wilson-snakeswoman.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/sharon-wilson-snakeswoman-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/sharon-wilson-snakeswoman-250x187.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">sharon wilson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a historic vote, attorney Sharon Wilson was unanimously elected to a second term as President of the Senate on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>It marked the first time a woman won re-election to head that legislative body.<\/p>\n<p>Business consultant and former diplomat Joseph Curry obtained the unanimous support of Senators for the vice presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Wilson and Mr Curry were nominated by Government Senate Leader Mrs Allyson Maynard-Gibson and supported by Senator Keith Bell.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Wilson affirmed that \u201cfairness will be our watchword in this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to let you know,\u201d she told Senators, \u201cthat we expect of you the level of decorum which ought to come from this chamber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am certain that we are all here with a common goal and that is the advancement of the cause of the Bahamian people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so I welcome you all as we try to move our Bahamaland truly forward, upward, onward together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Government Senate Leader Mrs Maynard-Gibson acknowledged the \u201cabsolute confidence\u201d of Senators in Mrs Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no one in the Senate chamber who questions her ability to preside fairly and effectively on behalf of the Bahamian people,\u201d she said. \u201cUndoubtedly she has earned her place in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bahamian electorate, she said, \u201chas given us a very strong mandate to effect change on their behalf. The change for which they voted is set out in our charter of governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Speech from the Throne, she said, sets out the new government\u2019s legislative agenda for the immediate parliamentary term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can count on the Government working hand in hand with the Opposition to effect change on behalf of the Bahamian people,\u201d said Mrs Maynard-Gibson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are most grateful and humble by the trust (the electorate) have reposed in us to be their servants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Minister of Education, Desmond Bannister, the Opposition Leader in the Senate, welcomed the election of Mrs Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe support your election,\u201d he told her, \u201cwhich brings a wonderful distinction in having served twice. I know that fairness will be your high note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government has to move their agenda,\u201d Mr Bannister added. \u201cWe\u2019re not here to be obstructionists we are here to ensure that they do move their agenda and that that agenda is moved expeditiously.
