Baha Mar constructed a nine-foot surge protection wall on the northern Cable Beach shoreline in order to comply with insurance requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The wall will go once the Beach Re-nourishment project has been completed to expand public access to the beach for both Bahamians and Baha Mar\u2019s hotel guests.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of the Environment and Housing Kenred Dorsett said during a recent interview, \u201cBaha Mar agrees with the Bahamas Government that all Bahamians have the legal right to access and enjoy the beach after the construction of the resort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surge wall was simply an insurance requirement to protect the hotel structure from water damage and collapse in the event of a hurricane,\u201d Mr Dorsett said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insurance company also required that the completion of the construction of the surge wall was to be finished, prior to the 2012 Hurricane Season.\u00a0 To date, it has been completed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bahamas Environment Science and Technology (BEST) Commission on June 15 inspected the completion of the surge wall in compliance to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) requirements.<\/p>\n<p>The sea wall now provides a baseline survey for the resort developers to measure their liability to repair the shoreline and implement a mitigation strategy against any negative changes to the shoreline.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22977\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22977\" style=\"width: 486px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22977 \" title=\"bahamar-turbidity-curtains\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-turbidity-curtains.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-turbidity-curtains.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-turbidity-curtains-150x69.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-turbidity-curtains-250x115.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22977\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aerial view of the double layer of turbidity curtains working to reduce sedimentary travel from impacting other marine environments along the shoreline, such as Goodman\u2019s Bay (BIS photo \/Gena Gibbs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr Dorsett also explained that Baha Mar applied for and signed a lease with The Bahamas Government only to rent the Crown Land where the beach is currently situated for its hotel guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaha Mar does not own the beach, the Government owns the beach.\u00a0 The rumours circulating around that Baha Mar owns it, are completely false,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBaha Mar agrees that the dune will be raised and the beach will be re-nourished and extended to about 15 to 20 feet away from the surge wall.\u00a0 This will enlarge the beach property and re-establish the pre-development high water mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baha Mar\u2019s developers have been working closely with the BEST Commission to mitigate the impact of the human carbon footprint on the Cable Beach natural environment.\u00a0 In some instances, Baha Mar has increased its preventative measures to ensure their obligation to the Bahamian public, Mr Dorsett said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22978\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22978\" style=\"width: 486px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22978 \" title=\"bahamar-surge-wall-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-surge-wall-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-surge-wall-2.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-surge-wall-2-150x69.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/bahamar-surge-wall-2-250x115.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As shown by photos taken on June 15, the surge wall has been completed as required by the insurance company.
