{"id":23083,"date":"2012-06-26T10:05:05","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T14:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=23083"},"modified":"2012-06-26T10:47:02","modified_gmt":"2012-06-26T14:47:02","slug":"more-nonsense-from-pro-numbers-lobby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/06\/more-nonsense-from-pro-numbers-lobby","title":{"rendered":"More Nonsense From Pro-Numbers Lobby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-21623\" style=\"margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;\" title=\"lottery, gambling, numbers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/lottery.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/lottery.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/lottery-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>After the Counsellors&#8217; lame attempt to justify the legalization of the numbers industry was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/06\/the-counsellors-need-counselling-22708.html\">smartly refuted<\/a>, a new lobbyist group is making their own ridiculous claims.<\/p>\n<p>The Counsellors, a normally respectable PR company, wrote a silly letter that was published in newspapers and online media, in an attempt to convince Bahamians that there are benefits to legalizing the illegal numbers industry in The Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>Their arguments were ridiculous and based on false information.\u00a0 One of The Bahamas&#8217; top bloggers tore them apart like a hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>So, now another group of pro-numbers lobbyists have written an even sillier letter to the editors of the local papers.<\/p>\n<p>Below, you&#8217;ll find the letter with my responses.<\/p>\n<p>We, the Alliance of the newly formed committee named All for One and One for All, after searching far and wide have made the following discovery, except for Atlantis and the government, the web shop cafes do the following:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>1) Hires more Bahamians than any other business<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is a disingenuous argument. It is based on combining employees from all illegal numbers operations. If one were to combine all non-numbers businesses, the total would dwarf the number of employees that work at web hops.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>2) Makes an annual contribution to NIB of $14,438,193.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>There is no evidence to support that claim.\u00a0 And how can illegal businesses contribute to NIB?\u00a0 Do drug dealers pay NIB?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>3) Have a higher water bill than most businesses.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Why?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>4) Pays more to BTC, BEC and Cable Bahamas than any other business \u2013 $12,277,650 annually.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Again, if true, this is a combined figure.\u00a0 The total expenditure of non-numbers businesses exceeds this by over 1000%.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>5) Capital improvement $7,340,550 annually.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>There is no evidence to support this.\u00a0 By the way, the money spent on capital improvements by illegal businesses should be confiscated under the &#8220;Proceeds of Crime&#8221; laws.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>6) Has a higher rental bill $2,296,816 annually.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Higher than what?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>7) Annual Business License $125,198.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How do illegal businesses get business licenses?\u00a0 Someone needs to do some &#8216;splainin bout dat.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>8 ) Tens of thousands of dollars are shipped out of the country on a weekly basis to purchase the Florida lottery.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is not something to brag about.\u00a0 We need to keep money in The Bahamas, not send it to the U.S.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>9) Annual sponsorship $1,557,000.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>These are illegal funds and the sponsorships might be considered bribes, depending on where the money went.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>10) Annual donations $4,121,250.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ditto<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>11) Annual rent $2,296,816.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is an unsubstantiated claim.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>12) Annual other operating expenses $8,756,580.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This is an unsubstantiated claim.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>13) Annual payroll $14,438,193.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Somebody is lying.\u00a0 How can the payroll be the same as the NIB contribution (see above)?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><strong>14) Because of the web shop cafes thousands of young men and women are now employed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>First of all, it is hundreds, not thousands.
