{"id":239723,"date":"2002-10-17T13:13:30","date_gmt":"2002-10-17T17:13:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=239723"},"modified":"2021-02-14T09:00:33","modified_gmt":"2021-02-14T14:00:33","slug":"police-constables-rape-charge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2002\/10\/police-constables-rape-charge","title":{"rendered":"Police Constable&#8217;s Rape Charge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lawyer for the police constable accused of rape asked the court to withhold the publication of the charge against his client.<\/p>\n<p><P>Police Constable Frank Gilbert, represented by lawyer Godfrey Pinder, was charged in Court 2 yesterday with raping a 35-year-old woman on Saturday, October 12.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;My client is a person of good character,&#8221; Mr. Pinder said.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>He told Magistrate Roger Gomez that it would be difficult for PC Gilbert to do his job if news of the incident were reoported<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Once the story has appeared, &#8221; it will be the equivalent to him being found guilty,&#8221; Mr. Pinder claimed.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Prosecutor Debbie Ferguson of the Office of the Attorney General told Magistrate Gomez that she trusts the press will handle the case responsibly.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Referring to the constable&#8217;s daughters, Mr. Pinder said the case would have a &#8220;chilling effect on the minds of these young persons.&#8221;<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;This matter will get out of hand before very long,&#8221; he said.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Magistrate Gomez said the court did not have the authority to withhold information of the charge.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Gilbert was not required to enter a plea.
