{"id":24095,"date":"2012-07-27T10:15:46","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T14:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/?p=24095"},"modified":"2012-07-27T10:30:09","modified_gmt":"2012-07-27T14:30:09","slug":"milo-butlers-family-wins-8-million-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2012\/07\/milo-butlers-family-wins-8-million-battle","title":{"rendered":"Milo Butler&#8217;s Family Wins $8 Million Battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_24096\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24096\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24096\" title=\"loretta-butler-turner\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/loretta-butler-turner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/loretta-butler-turner.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/loretta-butler-turner-150x112.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24096\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loretta Butler-Turner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The late Sir Milo Butler\u2019s family has won a battle with the US Justice Department over who should have first claim to $8 million raised from the sale of assets forfeited by convicted Bahamas-based fraudster, Derek Guise Turner.<\/p>\n<p>Documents obtained by Tribune Business reveal that the Court of Appeal has rejected an appeal by the Obama Justice Department against an earlier Supreme Court ruling that placed the Butler family, and other Bahamas-based investors who lost money in Mr Turner\u2019s scheme, at the front of the creditors\u2019 queue when it came claiming against the assets recovered in this nation.<\/p>\n<p>While all sides are awaiting the Court of Appeal\u2019s written reasons for its decision, numerous documents obtained by Tribune Business show that the Butler family &#8211; including former Cabinet Minister and now-deputy FNM leader, Loretta Butler-Turner &#8211; were among Mr Turner\u2019s biggest victims.<\/p>\n<p>His sentencing documents, filed in the US district court for eastern New York, list \u201cvictims\u201d collectively owed $55.374 million by Mr Turner. Among them is a \u2018Loretta Turner\u2019 who is owed $2.75 million.<\/p>\n<p>Loretta Turner is also named as a party in the Court of Appeal action, along with Messrs Edward and Derek Turner, plus several Butler family companies, Franklyn Holdings and Milo B. Butler &amp; Sons Investments.
