{"id":242527,"date":"2006-06-14T10:56:51","date_gmt":"2006-06-14T14:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/06\/cry-baby-mitchell-whines-about-media-again"},"modified":"2006-06-14T10:56:51","modified_gmt":"2006-06-14T14:56:51","slug":"cry-baby-mitchell-whines-about-media-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/06\/cry-baby-mitchell-whines-about-media-again","title":{"rendered":"Cry Baby Mitchell Whines About Media&#8230; Again."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The country&#8217;s daily newspapers have moved &#8220;down market&#8221; by publishing &#8220;perverse&#8221; and &#8220;twisted&#8221; interpretations of the facts according to Foreign Affairs and Public Service Minister Fred Mitchell.<\/p>\n<p>Giving his contribution to this year&#8217;s budget debate, Minister Mitchell during parliament&#8217;s evening session on Monday made a point to address what he considers a &#8220;major problem in the dissemination of information in this country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mitchell said that in his view the Bahamian newspapers have a significant problem with simply reporting &#8220;what was said and done without editorialising it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is only an issue for press that considers itself papers of record, not the trashy papers that simply sit down and manufacture information for the entertainment of its readers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that these papers have moved down-market, trying to compete with the trashy papers for lurid headlines and with salacious material in an effort to attract readers frightened off by the trashy papers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that his party once before in the past thought it necessary to create its own information machinery &#8220;because the message of the party was simply not getting out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If has become so bad in my view that one sees the most perverse and twisted interpretation of facts, so that this party and this government has to find a better way to get its message to its supporters,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>More specifically, Mr Mitchell accused certain factions of the press of deliberately twisting information &#8220;to promote an agenda, to perpetuate a great falsehood that there is some problem between the United States and ourselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As an example the minister named the news stories and editorials published last week in all the dailies regarding US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld&#8217;s suggestion to remove the army helicopters from the anti-drug smuggling initiative OPBAT and re-deploy them in the fight against terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mitchell said that despite US Ambassador John Rood&#8217;s assurances that there have been no talks to withdraw the helicopters from the OPBAT programme, the editorials remained the same, indicating &#8220;that there was some secret message from the United States to the Bahamas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What is happening is a hindrance to the orderly development of public policy and it ought to be cor-rected,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><small>By KARIN HERIG Tribune Staff Reporter<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foreign minister, whose lying website perverts the truth, is upset that other media does not toe the PLP line.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-242527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/242527","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=242527"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/242527\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=242527"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=242527"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=242527"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
