This may come as a big surprise to Perry Christie and Hubert Ingraham, but a man called PA Strachan intends to be the next prime minister of the Bahamas.<\/p>\n
The 59-year-old farmer from Bacardi Road has had enough of “promises and delusions” and says he intends to lead the country to a new age of prosperity.<\/p>\n
This week Mr Strachan, who claims to be a former FNM member, placed advertisements in Bahamian newspapers announcing the formation of the United Reform Party, of which he is leader.<\/p>\n
He told The Tribune yesterday he expects to run candidates in every seat in the Bahamas when the general election is called.<\/p>\n
With an alleged membership of 200, the URP is not entering the fray as just another meaningless “fringe” party, he stressed.<\/p>\n
According to Mr Strachan, it will wipe the PLP and FNM off the electoral map, heralding a new age in Bahamian politics.<\/p>\n
“I have come to the conclusion that commonsense ain’t so common,” said Mr Strachan. “We must educate the people properly. I don’t expect to gain no seats, I expect to win the government.”<\/p>\n
Claiming that “God is the real chief” of the URP, Mr Strachan added: “I have been in politics a long time. I have a lot of experience. I am well known and I learnt my politics from Cecil Wallace-Whitfield.”<\/p>\n
Why run now? “Because my time has come,” he said. “People are not registering to vote because they don’t think there’s anything to register for. The country is in a mess.<\/p>\n
“I am going to be holding a press conference soon and my party is going to have the biggest conference ever seen in these parts.”<\/p>\n
The URP intends to fight crime and provide the honesty and respect people are looking for, said the Eleuthera-born family man.<\/p>\n
“We’ll make no promises we can’t fulfil,” he added, “We will not tolerate false promises.”<\/p>\n
Are people likely to take him seriously? The Tribune asked. “People will not only take me seriously, I will be prime minister this next election. By God’s grace, I will become prime minister. Promises are comfort to a fool, but I say let the truth reign.<\/p>\n
“When God is on the throne, we cannot lose. I will make a good prime minister. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. I am thinking only of winning. Defeat doesn’t come to my mind.”<\/p>\n
Mr Strachan, who discarded his first name ‘Prince’ in favour of the initials ‘PA’, by which is known, said he will announce his list of candidates soon.<\/p>\n
Last night an arrogant PLP source said: “I guess we should be shaking in our shoes, but I ain’t heard of no PA Strachan or the United Reform Party.”<\/p>\n
