{"id":242667,"date":"2006-07-01T22:31:33","date_gmt":"2006-07-02T02:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/07\/no-integrity-accountability-or-transparency"},"modified":"2006-07-01T22:31:33","modified_gmt":"2006-07-02T02:31:33","slug":"no-integrity-accountability-or-transparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2006\/07\/no-integrity-accountability-or-transparency","title":{"rendered":"No Integrity, Accountability, Or Transparency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are numerous allegations of impropriety by ministers of government and the public has very little access to government records so that the truth can be known. \uffa0Such is the present state of affairs in my little country.<\/p>\n<p>Citizens continue to demand integrity in public office and accountability and transparency from government ministers. \uffa0There are still many unresolved issues and the government is still determined to sweep them under the carpet and pool wool over people eyes. \uffa0The following allegations are just the tip of the iceberg:<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The disappearance of $2,000,000 from the electricity generation project.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The disappearance of $9,000,000 from NHC.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The disappearance of a US$1,000,000 gift from Libya.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The movement of $1,000,000 from the treasury to a Consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The under the table deals involving road contracts.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The condos and mansions owned by labour ministers.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The rental of generators.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The sale of sugar lands to foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0$4,000,000 debt forgiveness to labour building contractor.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The disappearance of monies from Solid Waste, Port Authority and other government departments.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The Whitegate and LaValle scandals.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The awarding of government contracts without proper procurement procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The giving of a government house rent-free to a labour man to run a gym.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The Stevia land deal with a Chinaman.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The 5% cut that ministers take for certain projects.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The US$8,500,000 that was taken to the Bahamas.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The hiring of Hartley Henry as a government consultant.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The murder of Jude Matthew and Billy Herbert and his fishing party.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The awarding of government scholarships to persons who do not satisfy the requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The non-filing of land sale documents in the Registry.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The abuse of Social Security and National Bank funds.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The purchase of land and property by certain government entities.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0$300,000 to put stones in front of a hotel in Nevis.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0$1,300,000 for advertising roads by a building company.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0An overseas trip by a minister to buy prototype generators.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0Government scholarships given to a minister&#8221;s daughter.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0Use of taxpayers&#8217; money to finance a honeymoon trip.<\/p>\n<p>\uff95 \uffa0\uffa0The golf course deal government and a big hotel.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour government has betrayed the trust of the people. \uffa0After eleven years of mal-administration, the government has not seen it fit to practice good governance. \uffa0The Integrity in Public Life Bill was introduced in Parliament way back 1996 and the government has not touched it since. \uffa0What is the Labour government afraid of? \uffa0Quite often we hear government ministers talk about a transparent labour government yet since 1995 the financial accounts of music festival, carnival, and other statutory corporations have not been tabled in parliament. \uffa0The opposition has no access to the government&#8221;s media house. \uffa0In fact one worker was reprimanded for allowing Mr. Lindsay Grant to appear on television.<\/p>\n<p>It is now the norm for ministers of government to do things without giving an account of their actions. \uffa0This type of behaviour does not bode well for the development of our nation. \uffa0We need a few good men and women to lead us out of this social and economic morass. \uffa0The People&#8221;s Action Movement is offering the strong and effective leadership that is needed to chart a new course in good governance in St. Kitts and Nevis.<\/p>\n<p>By: Glenroy Blanchette<br \/>\nEast Basseterre Constituency #1 P.A.M.
