Prison Superintendent Elliston Rahming yesterday defended security at Her Majesty’s prison.<\/p>\n
Safety and security at the Prison came under intense scrutiny after the infamous January 17 prison break which left a prison officer and an inmate dead.<\/p>\n
Now, more than six months later, Superintendent Rahming says the Prison is operating smoothly.<\/p>\n
“Despite the tragic events of January 17 and despite the relentless efforts by some to use that event to define us, I am pleased to report that we have moved far beyond that dreadful moment,” he said.<\/p>\n
Superintendent Rahming pointed out that since the prison break, there have been no other major violent occurrences. <\/p>\n
“Indeed in the last seven months not one officer has been injured at the hands of an inmate,” he explained. “Further, in the same period there has been no evidence of abuse by staff. There has been just one case of inmate against inmate injury using home-made weapons in the past six months. This is a record achievement at Her Majesty’s Prisons. While there are no absolute guarantees in prison we intend to keep it that way.”<\/p>\n
Supt Rahming added that security at the Prison is continually upgraded. <\/p>\n
“That is why we have invested in self-protection devices for officers and we have an ambitious training programme hitherto unknown,” he explained.<\/p>\n
