{"id":244599,"date":"2003-12-11T11:59:21","date_gmt":"2003-12-11T16:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2003\/12\/bleachers-will-cost-merchants-5-10-million"},"modified":"2003-12-11T11:59:21","modified_gmt":"2003-12-11T16:59:21","slug":"bleachers-will-cost-merchants-5-10-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2003\/12\/bleachers-will-cost-merchants-5-10-million","title":{"rendered":"Bleachers Will Cost Merchants $5 &#8211; $10 Million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Government is expected to lose $1 &#8211; $2 million in tax revenue, workers will lose a projected $200,000 in sales commissions and taxis may lose $140,000 because their parking spots are blocked, according to the Nassau Tourism and Development Board.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n&#8220;This is the tragedy of the mess which we now face,&#8221; Normon Solomon, acting chairman of the board, told Prime Minister Christie in a letter dated December 7 and released to members yesterday.<br \/>\n<P><\/p>\n<p>The bleachers are being erected just as the board kicks off an evening programme of  shopping, dining and local entertainment designed to drum up business for struggling Bay Street.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nThe board released the letter to outline its &#8220;unsuccessful efforts,&#8221; to prevent a repeat of last year&#8217;s bleacher problem and its &#8220;disappointment in the outcome&#8221;<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nIt informed members that as of December 10 to New Year&#8217;s Day, bleachers would be assembled, broken down and reassembled to accommodate the Junior Junkanoo, Boxing Day and New Year&#8217;s parades.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nMr. Solomon said the board met with or wrote to the relevant ministry to share concerns and recommendations on October 31, November 7 and December 2 in 2002; and again on January 31, November 3, 13 and 25, 2003.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nThe board was repeatedly told that &#8220;everything humanly possible&#8221; would be done to minimise disruption.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nThen on November 25, the board was told bleacher construction would start on December 5 and remain in place until after the New Year.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n&#8220;We expressed shock and dismay,&#8221; and in fact were told that &#8220;had we known earlier of your concerns we could have ordered a different kind of bleacher.&#8221;<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nOn November 28, a group of retailers met with Mr. Wisdom.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nThe minister, said Mr. Solomon, indicated government would pay overtime to cover the assembly and breakdown of bleachers between parades.<P><br \/>\nHe promised a meeting with C3 &#8220;which never materialised&#8221;.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nThe Minister of Tourism Obie Wilchcombe intervened and a meeting was arranged for December 8 with Mr. Wisdom and C3 to discuss the matter.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nBut on December 6, two days before the meeting Bay Street was blocked and bleacher construction started without the board or public&#8217;s klnowledge.<br \/>\n<P><B>The Tribune<\/B><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Downtown merchants stand to lose $5 &#8211; $10 million in sales this month as a result of the mass placement of Junkanoo bleachers on Bay Street, they warned in a letter to the prime minister.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-244599","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-headlines"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244599","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=244599"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/244599\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=244599"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=244599"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=244599"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
