{"id":245146,"date":"2004-03-12T12:50:20","date_gmt":"2004-03-12T17:50:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2004\/03\/sheraton-managers-fear-sale-of-property"},"modified":"2004-03-12T12:50:20","modified_gmt":"2004-03-12T17:50:20","slug":"sheraton-managers-fear-sale-of-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2004\/03\/sheraton-managers-fear-sale-of-property","title":{"rendered":"Sheraton Managers Fear Sale Of Property"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Under labour laws, managers and supervisors are entitled to receive four weeks pay for each year of service they gave up to a maximum of 48 weeks. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>However, a few of the hotel&#8217;s managers are fearful that resort owners may not fulfill this requirement. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;We are hearing that 75 percent of the managers and supervisors will only receive two weeks per year or 50 percent of their entitlement.  This is wrong,&#8221; one manager told The Bahama Journal on Wednesday, speaking on  condition of anonymity. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Sheraton Grand officials recently reported to workers that the owners have entered into an agreement in principle to sell the resort to another company.  According to a source close to Sheraton Grand, the hotel is being sold to RIU Hotels and Resorts, an expanding international chain.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Some employees believe the intention is for RIU to close the Sheraton, reopening it as an all-inclusive five star resort. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;We want to know as a management team, will they guarantee jobs, are jobs secured and how long the hotel will be closed for,&#8221; said the manager. &#8220;We want consideration to be given for persons who are employed, to be rehired.&#8221;<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The manager said relevant government authorities must ensure that Sheraton owners adhere to labour laws. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;We would also like them to reveal plans as they become available, regarding the closure and re-opening of the resort,&#8221; the manager said .<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>In a March 5 notice to employees, Sheraton&#8217;s Vice President and General Manager Alfred Gorlick said upon closure of the hotel all positions except those, which the company feels &#8220;must be retained for a while&#8221;, will be made redundant.  <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&#8220;The benefits applicable thereto will accrue to the benefit of the affected employees and will be discharged at that time,&#8221; Mr. Gorlick said.  <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Should the intended and &#8220;expected sale&#8221; not materialize as planned, Mr. Gorlick said all jobs would remain secure, until another buyer purchases the property.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>It was a clear signal that the current owners of the hotel are determined to sell it. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Mr. Gorlick pointed out recently that the prospective buyers have until March 31 to perform a full inspection of the property and determine if they will go ahead with the purchase.  <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The potential sale of the 340-room Sheraton Grand comes as Kerzner International officials prepare for a $600-million phase three expansion to the Atlantis Resort, which is next door to the Sheraton. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Mr. Gorlick said he &#8220;regrets&#8221; the somewhat uncertain nature of the notice, but highlighted that it is caused by the uncertain circumstances that surround acquisitions of this type.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><B>Hadassah Hall, The Bahama Journal<\/B><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some managers of the Sheraton Grand Resort are concerned about the impact the potential sale of the Paradise Island property would have.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"rop_custom_images_group":[],"rop_custom_messages_group":[],"rop_publish_now":"initial","rop_publish_now_accounts":{"facebook_10223285771444175_51037792744":""},"rop_publish_now_history":[],"rop_publish_now_status":"pending","footnotes":""},"categories":[12],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-245146","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-headlines"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/245146","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=245146"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/245146\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=245146"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=245146"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=245146"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
