I read, with mounting frustration, the Tribune article dated Monday, April 5th, 2004, entitled “Dodgy land deals ‘could wreck the Bahamas reputation'”. The article is about foreigners being ripped off, primarily by lawyers, in land purchases based on worthless deeds.

\nBut what about Bahamian citizens with clear title to their land? Because of ‘dodgy’ court games and indisputably unethical lawyers, I have had a rogue tenant in my commercial building for three years who hasn’t paid a dime of rent.

\nDespite having been legally evicted, the rogue tenant has employed the services of ‘dodgy’ lawyers and compromised judges to manipulate the legal system, allowing him to stay in the building against all logic and the rule of law.
\n
\nMy constitutional rights are being violated and my rights as a property owner are being trampled on. And this is strictly due to corruption in the court system and unethical lawyers.
\n
\nThe problem is bigger than The Tribune article indicates. And unless this problem is properly addressed it indeed “makes us look like a bunch of pirates”.
