{"id":245708,"date":"2004-08-18T12:07:41","date_gmt":"2004-08-18T16:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2004\/08\/pm-wants-campaign-finance-reform"},"modified":"2004-08-18T12:07:41","modified_gmt":"2004-08-18T16:07:41","slug":"pm-wants-campaign-finance-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2004\/08\/pm-wants-campaign-finance-reform","title":{"rendered":"PM Wants Campaign Finance Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The prime minister\uffb4s personal assistant, Dr. Elliston Rahming, said Tuesday he would be surprised if the financial contributions made to the Progressive Liberal Party by Iranian businessman Mohammed Harajchi during the 2002 election campaign exceeded $500,000.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>He also said that Prime Minister Perry Christie is pushing for campaign finance reform.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Dr. Rahming, who said he was \uff93intimately\uff92 involved in the last campaign, was a guest on the radio Love 97 programme \uff93Issues of The Day\uff92, with host, Jeff Lloyd.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>\uff93I\uffb4m being somewhat generous in giving that figure,\uff92 he said. \uff93Let\uffb4s face it. He produced less than $200,000 worth of receipts. If you have given $10 million and you can only produce $200,000, that within itself should put an end to the discussion and show him as the fallacious person that he is.\uff92<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>He claimed that Mr. Harajchi was telling an untruth when he claimed he contributed $10 million to the PLP.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>\uff93He told the truth when he said he made a contribution to the PLP; that is true,\uff92 Dr. Rahming said. \uff93He didn\uffb4t tell the truth when he didn\uffb4t say he made contributions to other parties as well.\uff92 <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Last week, at his Paradise Island home, Mr. Harajchi held a press conference where he personally attacked members of the Cabinet.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>He alleged that he financed the restoration of the PLP\uffb4s headquarters on Farrington Road, and in response to a question, declined to flat out deny that he renovated the home of the Prime Minister Perry Christie. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Since then several government officials, including Prime Minister Christie and the Deputy Prime Minister, have gone on the record refuting Mr. Harajchi\uffb4s claims. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>While on the show, Dr. Rahming noted that \uff93Our Plan\uff92, the document produced by the PLP during the 2002 campaign, speaks of the need for campaign finance reform.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Under the headline \uff91Constitutional Reform\uffb4, the Plan says, \uff93The Constitution ought to provide that Parliament may prescribe by law for open and fairness in procedure for the funding of parties at elections both local and national.
