{"id":246171,"date":"2004-11-29T11:10:45","date_gmt":"2004-11-29T16:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2004\/11\/probe-into-increasing-murder-acquittals"},"modified":"2004-11-29T11:10:45","modified_gmt":"2004-11-29T16:10:45","slug":"probe-into-increasing-murder-acquittals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bahamasb2b.com\/news\/2004\/11\/probe-into-increasing-murder-acquittals","title":{"rendered":"Probe Into Increasing Murder Acquittals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Attorney General&#8217;s office is investigating a number of cases where persons were acquitted for murder, due in some part to witnesses failing to appear in court.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nAccording to Chief of Public Prosecutions Bernard Turner, the AG&#8217;s office is concerned about the number of acquittals, which he said had increased in the last two years and particularly in the last few weeks.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nTherefore, he said legislation is being drafted to address this.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nThe AG&#8217;s office is looking at increasing penalties for witnesses who do not appear in court, and for those penalties to be stiffer for police officers who fail to do their duty.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\nAlso, Mr. Turner said they are looking to make, where constitutionally permissable, a greater use of witness statements.
