Inspector Walter Evans also said police launched an island-wide manhunt for the second suspect. <\/p>\n
Official reports indicate that shortly after 7 o’clock Saturday night two masked gunmen entered the Cable Beach City Market food store and robbed that establishment of an undetermined amount of cash.<\/p>\n
The culprits reportedly escaped in a white Nissan Sentra, however, officers on patrol in the area were alerted to the robbery, observed the vehicle travelling along Skyline Drive, and chased the getaway vehicle, Inspector Evans said. <\/p>\n
As the Sentra approached Oak Hill Road, which is located just off Skyline Drive, the occupants reportedly exited the vehicle and fired several gunshots at the officers.<\/p>\n
“There was a series of gunfire aimed at the police,” said Mr. Evans.<\/p>\n
“The police returned fire and one of the two occupants was struck to the left upper back area.”<\/p>\n
Police reported that the suspect succumbed to the gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
The other occupant, Mr. Evans said, was able to escape into the surrounding area on foot.<\/p>\n
The deceased was described as being of medium build and a dark complexion. He was believed to be in his early thirties, and was dressed in a black tam, a navy blue coverall, and dark-coloured tennis shoes, Mr. Evans said.<\/p>\n
Police reportedly impounded the vehicle. <\/p>\n
Investigations into the robbery and shooting, and the search for the other occupant of the Sentra continued on Sunday.<\/p>\n
